I also saw the interview on TV. Emma Willis (Emma Heming Willis) was interviewed by Diane Sawyer in an ABC News special titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey,” which aired on August 26, It was wonderful
I believe the book was just released Sept. 9. I’m on the request list at my local public library. Sounds like an amazing resource for caregivers.
What resonated with me most was Emma's discussion of Ambiguous Loss: "when the person is physically present but psychologically absent."
This is a perfect description of what a caregiver feels living with someone with dementia.
Also, along with Emma’s book and story I discovered a podcast entitled “My Spouse Has Dementia” by Zita Christian. I started with her first recording and have listened to her entire series. It is very eye opening to what this disease will do to our loved one and all that may be required of us as care givers. I came away asking myself…can I do this?
I also listened to Zita Christians entire story. Sad but reality.
I am thankful for the book and podcast recommendations. For me, educating myself about the dementia journey I am on with my husband who has moderate dementia has been sanity saving. I compare it to the actual journeys that we would take where before leaving our familiar environment, we would look at maps and read guide books about what to expect in this new place. What the best things to see and do and what resources were available if one of us should need medical or dental care. I highly recommend Teepa Snow's Positive Approach to Care website. There are podcasts and courses available to help you understand "brain failure" aka dementia. What has been shown to work and what does not. I have taken two online courses and will take the last two in the series in October. It helps me to understand where I am going and what to expect along the way. Very, very informative and helpful to me.
