Please help - Rectal Cancer with Possible Lung Metastasis
I had a CT scan yesterday and found the following.
concerning for metastatic disease as follows:

* 3 mm nodule lateral left lower lobe (2/52), new since prior exam.
Chemo and rectal Surgery completed in 2/2023. Meeting with the oncology team next week to review the results. I need help to find a hospital that specializes in Lung cancer. reply or Private message me with best hospital name, & doctors (Skilled/Passionate about results than effort) oncologist, surgeon & radiologist.

So after 4 years of casually observing this nodule, you get everybody to kick into high gear in your haste .... "let's work together here to conceal lung surgery from my kids and others" ... amazing! ... and after a few days they won't suspect a thing!
Then it's like, "oh s#@, this thing is cancerous"....and the doctor decides to just take the entire lobe!
And all your doctor can think to say is, "No worry, the other lobe will take up the slack"!
I'm not making light of your situation but this is so unimaginable that something like this can actually happen is just unbelievable, to say the least!
I think there's a malpractice suit in here somewhere ... who knows?
I would start out with finding why that small Nodule did not present to the surgeon as a good match for resection?
I had a small Nodule that surprised no one and was predicted to be cancer and a normal wedge resection was planned and performed without any complications.
And I am thankful for that!
In the first few months, I found myself having to sit down and catch my breath after doing something .... Now 18 months later, I nor anyone else, would ever guess that I have part of a lung missing.
Having no family or close friends in my area, and not knowing anyone around, I probably could have kept my lung and colon surgeries concealed from the world!
I did all of my hospital trips and visits by myself as I had no other choice. We get through what we have to as we age.
I sincerely hope that you will find great improvement in your breathing capacity and no longer have pain. You are still healing!
Oh, I almost forgot!
I really don't see how a consult with an Oncologist prior, could have had much impact on this.
You needed the surgery. Just which surgery?
Best wishes to you always!
Paul
*You should be doing your breathing exercises with the little plastic apparatus that I hope your doctor or the hospital gave you.
To varg4258:
If I were you I would do only one thing at this point.
Call either MD Andersen Cancer Care Center in TX or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY.
You should get an appointment for an evaluation ASAP.
MD Andersen has facilities for housing for their patients. Not sure if Sloan does.
Yes, possibly difficult for you to travel there. But these are the 2 top places in the country for cancer treatment.
All state of the art.
The Very Best of Luck to you!
Hi @varg4258, I'd like to bring this discussion back to you and the spread of rectal cancer to your lungs. It can be hard to choose between treatment options. To help you make the decision, I would ask questions of your team like:
- What are the risks of each treatment?
- What is recovery like?
- What are the potential short-term and long-term side effects of each?
- Is there anything in my medical history or current health status that would suggest one treatment is better for ME than the other?
Have you decided on a second opinion?
