Phantom Smoking Smells

Posted by qtarawright @qtarawright, Aug 28, 2021

No one in my household smokes but for the past 5 years I been smelling cigarette smoke. My son even started smelling it about 3 years ago. We thought it was the old man that died there visiting us. When my father in law passed we didn't smell it for a while but it came back. I guess I will be making us both a doctors appointment I never knew this was a health issue till now.

Hi @qtarawright and welcome to Connect. Yes, I have heard of this condition. Not that I have a medical background or could offer personal advice, but smelling things that aren't there is called Phantosmia. It is a medical condition sometimes known as olfactory hallucinations. Individuals with this condition believe they can smell certain odors such as smoke, natural gas, dirt, and flowers even when the smell does not exist.

They say that your sense of smell comes from your genetics so perhaps the condition is hereditary? Did anything significant happen 5 years ago when it started?

I also get phantom smells. Last smell was a nursing home smell and I got very ill after that. I smelled smoke right before I started having what seemed like ischemic attacks. Sometimes I smell roses or perfume. I forget to mention it to my neurologist. I will next time I see him. Curious to find out what your Dr says.
