How do you manage the situation when periferal neuropathy affects your balance and walking ability?

I don’t have pain. But, I have major balance problems when walking. PT has helped so much. And, finding shoes that you feel safe and balanced in. Shoes seem to be different for everyone. But, staying active is key, and being helped, with the correct strengthening and balance exercises, with a Physical Therapist made a big change in my confidence. Went from a rolling walker to a cane. Stepping up onto a curb or navigating a patched parking lot is no longer a problem. I will be honest in that I haven’t kept up all my exercises, but I do walk regularly and use a recumbent bike and a portable elliptical machine. And, for me, foot massage is helpful.
I wear Hoka Clifton 9, but it isn’t the shoe for everyone. I suggest you research shoes for improving balance and try them on in person. Take your time and try several shoes and walk the store. Good luck.

I am wearing a Brooks Ariel GTS for my weakness.

I was put into a wheelchair. It's great I can now go places. I honestly believe I will never walk again so have accepted that and moved on. @wenner

This seems like a good place to post this as it is related to balance. I saw one of my neurologists today and had her go over the MRI that was done on my lumbar spine. (If you have balance problems start there.) She pointed out where the ganglions were being pinched on exiting the spinal cord as a likely start of my balance problem. She did not offer any treatment for this. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it helps with balance but there is another discussion that you might find helpful if you haven't seen it.

John, I have found a therapist that does the kind of slow release that I think I need in my area and sent her a brief description of what I need and will see what she says. Thank you!

I have Polyneuropathy…and Functional Movement Disorder, FMD.

I’ve had trouble walking straight for about the last 8 years just after I got the PN. Walking through a parking lot I appeared drunk, and afraid the cops would stop me.

To be fair, I have arthritis in both knees, and feet. That makes walking painful too.

The FMD is sometimes so bad, I need to use a walker or cane so I don’t fall over. I feel like one of those old toys, Weeble. “Weebles wabble, but they don’t fall down”.

Well that explains a lot. I thought it was result of chemo but not sure now. The three end toes on each foot were very numb. It's been about a month maybe 6 weeks. I was having balance issues and even fell a couple times. I tried a back brace and almost immediately the feeling started coming back in my toes. I slept in it a couple nights. Now I know it's back related and will discuss it further with pain doc.

A Pain doc is a good place to start but you might need a neurologist to get to the bottom of it. Good luck!
