Pelvic Floor PT, post RARP. How many sessions?

Posted by jeff1963 @jeff1963, Feb 3 8:25am

I've read of many people having Pelvic Floor Training (aka PT) for incontinence either before or after prostatectomy.

How many sessions did you have? More than once per week? For how many weeks?

I'm 7 weeks post-RP and am doing Kegels (best I know how) and would like to get the guidance from a PT expert. Trying to understand the typical duration.

@grehenn , how did you find someone who specializes in male pelvic floor exercises?

@colleenyoung I was able to find mine by first doing an internet search and then calling the PT offices. Have my initial appointment next week. She has been specializing in PFM therapy (both men and women) for 10 years. No personal references but am hopeful she will help me.

I know it's off topic, but for the life of me I cannot understand why my Mayo doctor would tell me to do Kegels but would not write an order for PFM training, makes no sense. Not so important, since my PCP wrote any order, but just trying to understand the reasoning besides "that's what the doctor said".

My surgeon showed me how to do them. I did them religiously before(30 days) and after and had Zero incontinence issues. Good luck.

@colleenyoung
Usually will be a female PT as the exercises are very similar for both genders. Most PT clinics will have a PF specialist. Hubs was a tad embarrassed but it helped him almost immediately so he quickly got past that.

The is only one PT that specializes in pelvic floor therapy in my area. She is an hour away. You can get away with less sessions if you are committed to doing the exercises at home. I had one session every 6 weeks for six months. I exercised 5 days per week at home. Most people need to go for accountability.

this really is a great question
it took me quite a bit or research and phone calls ( and I am near a big city ( between DC and Baltimore)
Many will do PFM training (Kegels+) However as noted most are familiar with women ( not a super big deal) I wanted someone with experience with males and post prostectomy. I finally found someone. This woman trained out of state and ended up with some specialization with exactly what I wanted. she was very very helpful and I feel like I would not have gotten the same results with someone else.
I made tons of phone calls and asked if the person had experience with males and post protatectomy.

You could try calling some big urologists like those associated with a teaching hospital in your area. even if you are not a patient many times the urology department has a few referrals. I did this a few times and found they were very helpful ( for example GW and Georgetown dept of urology)

@edinmaryland My PT is associated with a local women's hospital. There are 5 therapists in the practice the do PFM training, but she is the only one (I think) that works with both men and women. So that might be another clue for someone looking, call PT offices at women's hospitals.

I had RARP 7 weeks ago. I too read about pelvic floor PT and requested to be referred by urologists. He referred me and recommended a place about 30 miles away saying pt for male pelvic floor is difficult to find. I don’t know why. I have been going a week and already very glad I did. The doctors told me to do Kegels and that was it. Like you I did it as best I knew how. The pt person not only told me what to do but why it worked! I highly recommend it!
