Partial colon removal

Posted by note8book @note8book, Jul 26 5:47pm

I am an 83 year old female and last year I had to have 12" of my colon removed because of diverticulosis and an absess in my colon. The surgeon told me to keep taking the same amount of Metamucil that I was taking before the surgery. I was taking 4 TBSP every night before and am still taking the same amount to stay regular. Are there any suggestions as to what else I can take to stay regular?

The reason you're having diverticulitis is lack of fiber and your colon isn't emptying like it should. I have peppermint capsules that are called IB Guard but they just seem to irritate my colon. I eat a lot of soft peppermints candy that seem to help my digestion some. If you keep having bouts of diverticulitis you will also eventually have one of the diverticula on your colon will get blocked and form an abcess and if it ruptures you will be very very sick. I had one and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance with an EMT riding in the back with me. Fortunately it did not rupture and I had to have surgery and have the 12" of my colon removed on the left side where all of the diverticulitis was.

Good morning,
I think I'm heading in that direction. Could you tell me how your surgery went, and most importantly, how are you today! 🙏♥️
Sincerely,
Theresa

Well the surgery wasn't so bad but the recovery was very difficult. The surgeon did robotic surgery with the Davinci Robot at the hospital so I did not have a large incision and he was able to connect it back together so I do not have an ostomy bag. He stapled it together with stainless steel staples. I had everything that he told me I would have such as blood in my stool and bladder, nausea, diarrhea, not wanting to eat but having to make myself eat and I had all of them.
It took 8 weeks to recover. Of course my age did not help me because I was 82. I still have irritable bowel syndrome and still have to take Metamucil in order to stay regular. He also told me that I could still have the big D but not as often as I had been.

Thank you so much for your story! I hope and pray you get better by the day, and the big, "D" never returns. I'm fighting with it right now 🙁 Liquids and soft foods.
Thanks again 🙏❤️

I had a robotic partial colectomy almost two years ago after suffering from chronic Diverticulitis that eventually caused an abscess. Until I recently discovered Sunfiber, a prebiotic fiber, I continued to suffer with Diarrhea and unpredictable bowel movements. For me, Sunfiber was the answer. I still have four or five small, formed bowel movements a day, but I have both my freedom (to go out) and my energy back. For the record, I had tried Metamucil, Benefiber, Miralax, Organic Psyllium and stool softeners. No more gas or bloating.

I buy it online directly through Sunfiber.com.

Is Sunfiber gritty like Metamucil?

I switched to Benefiber. Is it more like Benefiber-you can't taste it and not gritty?

Oh, God, no! It's clear and dissolves in water--no grit. I went to the Sunfiber website yesterday and discovered they'll send you a free sample to try. Clear, tasteless, no gas, no bloating--I sound like I'm doing a commercial, but this product gave me back my life after almost two years!
