Partial colon removal
I am an 83 year old female and last year I had to have 12" of my colon removed because of diverticulosis and an absess in my colon. The surgeon told me to keep taking the same amount of Metamucil that I was taking before the surgery. I was taking 4 TBSP every night before and am still taking the same amount to stay regular. Are there any suggestions as to what else I can take to stay regular?

If the Metamucil works well I wouldn't make any changes. Everyone is different, so what works for me may not work for you. Is there a reason you are looking for other options?
I had a partial colectomy twenty-three month's ago. I tried Benefiber, Miralax, Metamucil, Organic Psyllium, Stool Softeners and Sunfiber. Discuss with your doctor for recommendations. For me, Sunfiber works best, but we're all different. Good luck!
I had my sigmoid colon removed in January at Mayo Clinic. In the past I had tried different fibers, all of which either did not work, or caused way too much discomfort. A few months post-op when I was experiencing irregularity, on the advice of my Mayo Colorectal Surgeon’s office, I was advised to take soluble fiber only, either Benefiber or Heather’s Tummy Fiber. I went with Heather’s and started slow, and it has been the best solution for regulating my system without any side effects. I leveled out on a very low dose, because that’s what my system tolerates.
Wishing you the best of luck.
Thank you for the advice.
Hello @note8book, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You have been on quite the journey to get to the place of having part of your colon removed. I imagine that is continuing but looks very different since. I am hopeful reading through thoughts members have provided so far.
I have not had surgery though I am on my own digestive journey. My experience trying a variety of approaches to improving how my body processes food is that my doctors have been amazingly helpful when they walk with me through changes I make. It may really help to continue with recommendations and report back to your doctor to see what feedback they have.
You may have seen a new discussion about diet following surgery that may be helpful to you. I am including the link here in case you haven’t: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/how-do-i-eat-after-digestive-tract-surgery/
If you are comfortable sharing a bit about your experience it may help others know how to comment. When did you have your surgery? How are you feeling, and do you have plans go back to see your doctor?
I take sugar free gummies at nite. 3 is the suggested amount . I took 5 one evening and it made me fart slot that nite, but no pain it was just annoying! 1 dose per evening! I had a emergency surgery because my colon burst 4 years ago! I had divercultist and you know this condition will weaken your colon wall. My doctor believes that this divercultist was caused by too many daily doses of duexsis, a ibuprofen product! I needed a knee replacement, but waited 3 years to fix it! In the mean time I was taking ibuprofen for the pain. No more ibuprofen for me in any form! I had all my divercultist cut out and now I use Metamucil in the morning and sugar free fiber gummies at nite. They taste good too. Just eat a high fiber diet for nutrition!
I have used Metamucil for years as a bulk builder. It works for me. I also have other health issues. I have fibromyalgia to deal with also. I try to eat a healthy diet when I feel like eating. I also have high blood pressure and take meds for it three times a day.
I had the surgery on Sept. 3,2024. It took me 8 weeks to recover and after that I have never seen my surgeon after my final visit to see him. He just said that "If you need me you know where I am." I have other health issues to deal with such as fibromyalgia and high blood pressure.
Hi! I take Heather's Tummy Tamers, they're peppermint capsules. I have her fiber as well, but fiber doesn't seem to be my friend? My nutritionist doesn't believe in fiber unless it's in our food. Even then, I cannot have a lot.
I've been getting bouts of diverticulitis every month and just emailed my GI about a surgical consult!
The reason you're having diverticulitis is lack of fiber and your colon isn't emptying like it should. I have peppermint capsules that are called IB Guard but they just seem to irritate my colon. I eat a lot of soft peppermints candy that seem to help my digestion some. If you keep having bouts of diverticulitis you will also eventually have one of the diverticula on your colon will get blocked and form an abcess and if it ruptures you will be very very sick. I had one and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance with an EMT riding in the back with me. Fortunately it did not rupture and I had to have surgery and have the 12" of my colon removed on the left side where all of the diverticulitis was.
