Pain under ribs for 9 years

Posted by houbrem @houbrem, Sep 21, 2018

I have had this pain on my right side, under my rib cage for 9 years. in the last month or so it has become chronic. I have had an MRI of the abdomen covering liver, pancreas, kidneys. They found an hemangioma in my liver and a cyst on my left kidney. They are telling me that this should not be causing me pain. The doctor cannot feel any lump as I think I do. but thinks it is my ribs. I am seeking another opinion from a different Gastroenterologist. She did suggest I see a surgeon to go in and explore because we can't seem to find anything wrong. But I explained that I am in pain everyday and now even when I bend at the waist I get a pain. which is new. Has anyone ever had anything like this. I don't know if I want surgery, too scared.

Have you been checked for Neuralgia? I have terrible nerve pain wrapping on my spine under my ribs in the front this is coming from my Thoracic so it may be a totally different issue but I just thought I’d throw it out there…good luck.

I have the same problem and it becomes worse when I bend over. A recent CT scan did not show any abnormalities, and my doctor can offer no reason for this pain, which I know can be very annoying. Even though I would consider myself a fairly good internet sleuth, I have been unable to find any articles that address this common problem. I am sorry you have suffered for so long with this issue. Best of luck.

I have the same issue; it's always on my left side right under the breast. The doctors can find no reason for it and I have had this for probably 30 years. When it hits it is very painful and nothing that I have tried has alleviated the pain. You just have to wait it out. I hope that those of you that have experienced this can find some relief.
Good luck to you

I had been having severe pain under my ribs and abdominal discomfort for years, especially after eating or exercise. The Dr's. kept checking my gallbladder and all the surrounding areas, but the test kept coming back as normal. It wasn't until I had a CT done with contrast that they were able to locate the problem. I was diagnosed with a rare condition called, celiac artery stenosis secondary to median arcuate ligament compression. If you look up MALS you will see that many of the symptoms mentioned fit the description. It is often missed because it is so rare. Hope this helps someone

Did you ever get a diagnosis? I have been having the same constant pain under right rib cage for 2 years 7 months. Constant pain. I have been had numerous bloodwork test, MRCP, MRI, CT Scan, Ultrasound, Endoscopy (twice) and Colonoscopy. They have found a small hiatal hernia and a cyst on my liver. They say neither should not be causing this pain. Sleevectomy in 2014 and Cholesyctecomy in 2019. The only diagnosis they will give me is “internal scar tissue” but I don’t believe that diagnosis. This pain can be relentless. More painful during sleep when lying down. So not only is it disrupting my daily activities but also my sleep. Any new information for you?

Hello there @suzannes, and welcome to Connect. This forum supports sharing experiences as a way to improve the knowledge that we have about our respective conditions. And knowledge is power. I want to ask you about the rib cage pain. Do you think that the pain in any way relates to other parts of your body?

I have two sessions a week of MFR (myofascial release therapy). At some time during every session, the area of my body being worked on will send pain signals to the left side of my rib cage. That has been happening for at least 5-6 years. I can reach it and use the pressure of my hand to invite relief. It always surprises me that massaging my numb feet will send pain signals to my rib cage. According to my therapist that is not an abnormal reaction.

Are you doing exercises and stretches?
May you be safe, protected, and free of inner and outer pain.
Chris

Had similar issues. It was musculoskeletal, which most docs never even consider.

It's a process, but initially you start off with an ultrasound to determine if you have a blockage of blood flowing from your aorta. Mine is over 70 % blocked at this time. Then I had a temporary procedure called plexus nerve block, it prevents celiac plexus nerves from sending pain messages to the brain. If it works then you are a good candidate for the surgery to remove the celiac nerves. Mine did work so I am on to the final visit with the surgeon. While I wait I just manage my pain, medication does not help me.
