Pain in thigh 5 months after THR
Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing pain in my thigh for the past three days. I had a complex THR at the end of January. I thought by now the thigh pain would be long gone. Does the pain come and go for awhile. It has been raining here for several days now and I was wondering if that was a factor as in the past I have had pain when it rained. Can arthritis still be present in the thigh after a THR? Was also wondering if I should cut back on walking on the treadmill although I am not going very fast or for long periods of time.

I think I know what it IS! I think its referred pain from your spine or facet joints (from stenosis in the facet joints)! Try RFA/RFI at a doctor who knows what they are doing. It's covered under insurance. Ask for heat, not pulse method, it could take two sessions at the same points. I had THR (two) but had little to do with the thigh pain! the RFA lasted for 15 years. It returned a couple times but went away entirely when I had my lumbar spine surgery (fusions, laminectomies L3,4,5) and it hasn't returned and its been 5 years. It will return a little if I lift stuff which is too heavy and I shouldn't be! referred pain around the front of your thighs comes from particular places being impinged out of your spine/facet joints. Good luck and let me know if I was right! The RFA is noninvasive and if it doesn't work, no big deal but if it does YOU CAN SLEEP AGAIN! OMG I remember that so well!
I am 5 months FHR Posterior , also it is cemented in. I am 75 years old. I have burning and soreness when I rub or bump it. I also have numbness in thigh. My knee clicks when I walk. And I do have sciatica from 3 lumbar fusions. Doc took x-rays a month ago and said all looks good. But my understanding is you can’t see if there’s an infection on X-ray. I worry about because I and an infected tooth that I had pulled 3 months out. Just wish I knew for sure. It would lighten the stress.
I had chronic bursitis after hip replacement (plus several other issues). Went back in and he removed the bursa. Things felt better for a while after that but still having a lot of pain and limited mobility (4 yrs later), which I believe is due to other issues. Am thinking about changing doctors.
I do, three years after hip replacement. I can’t lay on that side because it hurts and there is a hard spot that really hurts….
Thanks to all who responded to this thread. I had began to think I was the only ly one who suffered from all of these issues after hip surgery! I have experienced most of what you have described. Three weeks ago I had cortisone injections in my spine which helped the non- surgical side. It helped!!! The surgical side is still painful and I will get injections on that side after six weeks of therapy to see if that helps! I agree loriesco with the possibility of our pain confirm our spine. The orthopedic doctor ordered a MRI with and without contrast that indicated I have stenosis and other complications that have pinched nerves which are causing the pain. I am thank that we seem to be on a treatment plan that will hopefully give me some relief. I had hip replacement September 2023.
I was doing great; but then I over did it at 4.5 months. Set back as I now "feel" the implant whereas before I did not. I notice it about 60% of the time; not painful but different. I was doing lifting and carrying, a lot of bending. Will this just go away over time?
Overdoing it is one of the risks we have when we are finally free of pain...My shoulder surgeon refers to the period between 4 and 5 months post surgery as "the danger zone" - the period when we believe we are completely healed but in fact we are not. It sounds from your description of moving, lifting and hauling as though that is exactly what happened to you.
When you say you feel the implant, does it feel like something is moving that was fixed before? Or something shifted? If so, an x-ray by the surgeon can confirm that everything is still in place.
Or can you feel the implant when you palpate the area? That is actually normal - as swelling resolves and all the muscles settle back into place we get curious and poke around.
I actually found that after each hip surgery (I have had 2 replacements and 3 revisions in the past 20 years) it was about a year before I "forgot" my implants. Just 3 months ago I had a fall with a deep bruise on my hip, but no fracture thankfully; I'm still aware of a lump (a healing hematoma) and the implant like I was years ago.
Have you talked to the surgeon or had an x-ray?
Hi Sue,
So nice of you. I couldn’t seem to get in to reply to your thoughtful email. Will check with my surgeon’s APRN. I am hoping it will all resolve positively; like in your case, wow what a medical history!
Aloha/Marcia

Thank you Sue, started icing, and slowing down for now. Noticing improvement.
