Pain in thigh 5 months after THR
Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing pain in my thigh for the past three days. I had a complex THR at the end of January. I thought by now the thigh pain would be long gone. Does the pain come and go for awhile. It has been raining here for several days now and I was wondering if that was a factor as in the past I have had pain when it rained. Can arthritis still be present in the thigh after a THR? Was also wondering if I should cut back on walking on the treadmill although I am not going very fast or for long periods of time.

I'm really sorry to hear of your pain. has there been any change for you since your posting?
another update for me. i got a second opinion which the guy took some new x-rays and said i agree with the other doctor, just give it more time. I also made an appointment at Mayo clinic and saw a pain management doctor who gave me steroid shots. The pain relief was good but they said it could take up to three weeks for the steroids to work. I'm not really sure if they ever did.
Before following up with him, I also saw a neurologist (not at mayo) to see if it was a nerve problem. He was terrible. he did almost no talking, asked almost no questions and bare bones explaining. I had a test done on my legs (and arms as I was curious about them starting to fall asleep more then they used too.) and he said the tested showed nothing. (This is again as I'm laying down. no one seems to listen that the pain is when I sit, and somehow test me when I'm in that position. and when I ask i get some reason as to why it either isn't done that way, or isn't important). I did resume some physical therapy going off the assumption it could be sciatica. the stretches sort of help. but then I sit down again for any amount of time and the pressure and pain comes back.
now that I've helped my mother move from one state to another we are a little closer to Mayo, so I contacted the pain management doctor again. this time I had a CT with Contrast. He said it shows signs of inflammation around the S.I. joints, and and some around the Hip implant. So I'm scheduled to get I guess another inject at the S.I. joint and I think he said I should reach out to another orthopedic surgeon to check on the hip.
This is nuts. I get that its a major surgery and it is just barely a full year, but My 80-something yr old neighbor had it done three months ago and is still stiff and has pains but doesn't seem to complain about the same things.
I am two years post THR and still have pain. I live with it.
Can I ask if you working? If so, is it a sit down job? and how do you manage your pain. Ibuprofen or do you have any kind of prescription?
For me the thigh pain comes and goes. I’m almost 2 years out from my THR. I've had lots of PT and do various exercises. I started getting some massages these days and that is helping. This is a sports type of massage aimed at reducing pain.
Overall things are better than 6 months ago, a year ago. It’s just the way it is.
I retired right before my THR. I am very active in my community and work at my desk several hours per day. I cannot take Ibuprofen because of other health issues. I believe that “motion is lotion” and I try to walk every day and do balance exercises. I try not to focus on the pain and turn around negative thoughts into positive.
Please demand a MRI
I just left my surgeons office 9 months out of surgery and been having the same issues they kept telling me x-rays looked fine so did CAT scans. They finally did an MRI and it shows that my stem is not growing to my bone and now I have to have the surgery all over again.
I had a THR on both of my hips. No pain in left hip until right hip was fixed. Taking Ibuprofen for pain daily irritated my kidneys, so I can only take Tylenol as the pain is now in my back and neck.
I'm sorry to hear you are in pain, but I do have a suggestion. I too had this issue after my second hip replacement, and the doctor sent me back to Physical Therapy - but to a Rehabilitation Therapist. They were able to determine that I was walking improperly after limping on 2 bad hips for years.
Here is what happened - they sent me to get a new pair of supportive shoes that did NOT have my old wear patterns, so I was starting from neutral. Then they evaluated my walking, posture, stair climbing, etc from several angles and determined that I needed "gait training" - to make a conscious effort to walk straight and tall, keep my feet properly aligned and not lean. I practiced this in front of a mirror at PT and at home. They evaluated my strength and gave me exercises to strengthen core, thighs, legs, neck and back, then gave me specific exercises to correct weakness and imbalance. I still do some of these 12 years later.
Do you think you can get a referral for PT?
I had a subtalar joint fusion 5/23/24 that was Phase one of my R foot/ankle. Phase 2 is ankle replacement. My CT scan was done 11/8/24 the results were sent to the manufacturer. My pre op with the Surgeon was 11/18.
They called today and gave me 2/4/2025 as a surgery date.
My question is do you think this is too long a wait? Could my bone structure actually change in that amount of time? My R foot is weight bearing.
I have experienced hip pain after THR and still experience it 2 years after the surgery. It is nothing like the pain of bone on bone before the surgery and I have learned to live with it.
