Pain in the butt - Can't sit down

Posted by ecalderman @ecalderman, Nov 21, 2012

I have had very intense pain at my sitz bones for over 7 months and am unable to sit down. when I sit, it feels like I am sitting on two hot pokers or rocks and it is really unbearable. So, I have been standing for seven months. I've been to a couple of spine and pain management doctors, an orthopedist, a chiropractor, a neurologist, an acupuncturist, and a massage therapist. The original diagnosis was ischial bursitis but that ha not appeared on any images. I don't have any issues with any of my lumbar disks. I'm in constant pain even when standing or lying down though those activities do not hurt as much as sitting. Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

You might have deep gluteal syndrome. I have this which is pain deep inside my right buttock or glut. You might have it in both. A physiotherapist diagnosed this on me. It doesn't go either no matter what I do.

I have had ischial bursitis for about 2 years. It was diagnosed via ultrasound. I had two injections into the bursa neither of which helped. I don’t know whether it is a factor or not, but I’ve had a total hip replacement in that hip and then a iliopsoas tendon release in 2020. A few weeks ago the PA in my orthopedic surgeons office suggested trying pelvic floor physical therapy. Not all PT’s are qualified in this area. I have been going for about 5 weeks now and believe it is gradually getting better. I am able to ride in the car now without fully reclining with a pillow under my leg and I can sit a little longer in a chair than I could before. I am hopeful for the first time that something might be working!

So sorry that you all are suffering like this. For those that still have the sphincter muscle it’s around the rectum. When it gets in a spasm it is horrible pain and I have been tormented by it for more years than I can tell you. It started with two fissures (tears) in my rectum. When there is a tear in this muscle it goes into a hard spasm. So I have the pain from the fissures and I had the sphincter spasm. I have the only medication that works for it. Cyclobenzaprine. It’s dirt cheap and it saves me. It may only help one person but it’s worth writing about.

Did you ever find a way to ease your pain?

Hello, i have found some relief sitting on a ball to take the pressure off the sitz bone. I‘m wondering if anyone has found a good pillow to sit on that gives them relief.

I have pudendal neuralgia and sciatic nerve damage I can’t sit down very long and mine was caused by a surgery so I don’t know what caused yours but it’s excruciating and I’m at the end of my rope looking for answers. I hope you have better luck than I have. Good luck to you.
