Pain in my right buttock, pain goes down my leg
Hello! I have severe pain in my right buttock, and the pain goes down the back of my leg. There's sometimes when the pain is so unbearable, which causes me not to be able to walk. I take ibuprofen for the pain and I use an ice pack, it helps but not for long. I had gotten hit by car back in 2021. Me, my son, and my daughter in law were moving to California cause my son is in the military we drove of course. When went go into Houston Texas , a car hit us which caused us to wreck and the car ended up in the median. We were fine until the cop had my son and I go to our wrecked car that was still in the median to get our license. We walked to the car and as we started walking back towards the officer a car hydroplaned on the interstate and hit my son in the leg and then hit me and it through me 10 feet. My son thought I was dead. My head was split wide open and my right knee was split open as well . I was already having trouble with my buttock pain before the accident but now it's a whole lot worse.

My first thought question is whether you have been evaluated for sciatica? If not Google sciatica and see if it matches your symptoms.

I’m so sorry for what you and your son endured. I hope you were able to file insurance claims against other driver and a lawsuit for your injuries that could have been prevented. You should have never been expected to walk in an unsafe area just to get a license. Your car should have been safely moved to the shoulder with a tow truck.
Is the pain in your buttock and leg the same side or opposite side of the knee that was injured? Have you had MRIs of your lumbar spine and both hips/pelvis to see if there is any disc issues, spinal canal/nerve root compression or soft tissue injury/inflammation? Have you done any physical therapy or spine injections for pain? Be careful with ibuprofen because into too much too long and then diagnosed with esophagitis and gastritis erosions.

5 ReactionsWow I'm so sorry for what you've been through.
There's a lot to unpack from the multiple incidents you were involved in. All I can say is that severe, shooting pain in the buttock, hamstrings, and/or calf can be caused by a pinched sciatic nerve, located in your lower, lumbar spine.
I'm assuming you've been treated by a medical professional. what is their opinion?
If it is sciatica, it's better to apply ice to the source of the pain, the lower back. You can try that, but I'd get an MRI to find out what is going on in your lower back.
I've been through sciatica twice and I know the intense pain it produces. All the best to you and your son.

7 ReactionsThanks Hope,
It's not good to take NSAIDs for chronic pain. In addition to the GI issues, it is also hard on the kidneys. I only found this out after taking diclofenac for several months, first for a hip that was replaced, followed months later by a shoulder replacement.
Your response was spot on, especially the legal aspects. The cops should not have allowed this person to walk on a busy highway to get anything! It's a very unfortunate situation.

1 ReactionHow awful for your experience. I hope by now you have had a full evaluation and definitely an MRI for your back. The pain going down your leg and in your buttocks is likely coming from your lower back and caused by nerve impingement. You need the lumbar and sacrum MRIs.

2 ReactionsHoly cow! Sounds like it's lucky you're alive! I'm so sorry. It could be sciatica for sure but also could be issue with the SI joint and or nerve pain called sacrolilitis which I am also currently being evaluated for and that is also an autoimmune condition that can cause a type of spinal arthritis. There's a genetic marker in the blood that can also indicate that could be the issue.

2 ReactionsJeez, what a horror show of getting wiped out. I can see why your son thought you might be dead. That is so much at once. Sounds like sciatic pain when the butt hurts & a leg is involved. Same side? When I had those symptoms it ended up a couple discs mucked up & surgery was done. Lower lumbar discs. Less butt which was the location of an initial 'ping zap' like a pinprick of electricity. Essentially that's what it is when it's nerve pain. The surgery was successful. If you haven't been tested for such potential sources of your pain, try that route. Please update as you go along. It really helps to learn what goes on for you. Sure hope you find the source & get on the road to healing. All the best.

1 ReactionSciatica can cause this symptom.
My doctor told me there are physical therapy exercises online that will help with it . Either that or physical therapy visits.
