Over-medicated?

Posted by kaylenk @kaylenk, Feb 23, 2025

I have recently opened my eyes to the huge possibility that I am being greatly over-medicated by my psychiatrist. There are many reasons for this. Many different “symptoms” started popping up over the past year and a half. He has been my psychiatrist for 9 years. I recently have been studying the medications that I have been prescribed. Things for epilepsy, Parkinson’s, seizures, schizophrenia, bipolar, and much more. None of which even he has ever diagnosed me with. I have MDD, GAD, PTSD, some OCD very much controlled. Also TD, from an incorrect drug for my diagnoses as well. I certainly have nothing against folks who have all of those illnesses, but I would like to be treated for what I do have. I’m extremely hurt, and feel very alone in this area right now. I have dealt with my actual diagnoses for 40 years. I was 22 when it began. Because of my husband’s job, we moved a lot, so I’ve had several psychiatrists over the years. I have never been on this many drugs, or felt so crummy in mind and body. All of my teeth need to be removed this week, because of the horrible dry mouth from a drug that my current psychiatrist does not remember why he put me on it. The current dentist I have said that she can tell that I brush and take care of my teeth, because my gums are perfectly fine. Each day more roots of my teeth are showing. There is really nothing that can be done, but me now having to wear dentures.
I’m not sure where to go from here. I’m wondering if any of you have gone through something like this, and what you did about it. I really liked this doctor. He was so nice. Now I’m so hurt. I’m in a state of shock. I don’t understand what he was doing at all. Every time I had a rough or rotten day, I was given another drug. I feel so dumb that I didn’t get it. But my brain has been fuzzy. No wonder.

I have a primary MD, an endocrinologist and a cardiologist.
They all have prescribed RXs for me.
All meds have dizziness as a side effect. 5 in all.
I’ve asked that my primary MD consult with the other 2 and figure out what changes can be made to help me get on with living as I can barely function this way. No answer yet.
Is there anything else I can do?
I’m fearful of alienating them. I’m in a rural area with no other doctor options.

@lynnann50 - the pharmacist filling all these may also be able to meditate in this situation. Have you spoken to them?

@lisalucier
Thank you for replying.
My pharmacist said, "for liability reasons" he would have to defer to my MDs. "(
He said he could see some conflicts but couldn't advise me.
I did contact my primary care MD through my medical portal and asked that she please get together with my other 2 MD specialists but still no word back from her. So......I'm just sitting here so dizzy I almost can't walk.
I may just stop taking the most recent sleep med as it's only been 3 nights.
It's really frustrating feeling so out of control of my own health.

@lynnann50 Maybe you could compile a list of all your meds and send it to all three doctors for comment. Docs tend to be very busy & this would save them time. Hopefully all three will respond, but if even two respond, that could be helpful. Also perhaps try putting all the meds into an AI on the web (I use copilot.microsoft.com) - AI would give you a response in a matter of seconds.

I do know that these drugs that are primarily designed for another disorder are used for depression, because in come cases they do help. I would sit down with my doctor and just go over every drug you are taking, and why they would be helpful. I am currently weaning off a lot of my medications - I'm not sure which, if any, are actually working.

You may want to keep only those medications that worked for you and get rid of old unwanted meds, if you can. If you go to different Drs I can see how this might have evolved.
Sorry you are going thru this. But things will get better soon. Hang in there.
