Osteoporosis with supplements
Hi, I am a petit woman, 52 years old with osteoporosis -2.7 in my left hip, moderate oestopenia in spine and severe oestopenia in wrist and arms. I also have a tear in the interior meniscus in my right knee so I walk with a cane. I live alone as I have no family or children. I am a piscitarian, don't smoke, don't drink, and cut down on fizzy drinks and junk food 6 months ago. I learnt about my osteoporosis a year ago and I don't feel confident taking any medication. I started taking piscaldine and oesteodense, and am trying to maintain a healthy life style (enough dairy, protein, calcium intake) along with physiotherapy. The more I read about medications, their side effects and surgeries, I get petrified, especially when health care in my country is not that good, and I am on my own. Are there any natural ways to help maintain the bone density without these medications? I would very much appreciate your experience and advice.

@nycmusic bone renewal by pure synergy appears in my research to be better tolerated than others..you are right about the sourcing of minerals being more gut friendly. I had CRC last year and want to be very nice to my reconstructed gut, while helping my bones…there are many types of magnesium, of particular interest to me. Have you or others taken this supplement ? ..would be interesting to know.
I was told by my endo Reclast for 3 years then we will discuss what is next.
@kristie2
I am sure you've read other's comments about doing your own research. My experience is that I want to be prepared to work with my physician to choose a treatment plan that makes sense to me. Another important thing to discuss would be how the meds would be sequenced and why.

1 Reaction@gravity3 I totally agree. I have a year to research and another DEXA in August 2026. I will base my findings on these. Wouldn’t it be nice if no drugs were needed.

3 ReactionsThis product is a little over the top. Extremely expensive & does not appear to offer anything extra; other than K2.
All the other ingredients, excluding the D3 & K2 are botanicals with no scientific backing as to bone density treatment.
Plus, instructions say to take 5 capsules per day !! I already take so many supplements, this just seems ‘over the top.’ My opinion only, just saying you could buy the D3 & K2 much cheaper.
I already take so many supplements, I’d be hesitant to add. Biotin for alopecia, D3, acidophilus, Caltrate, magnesium glycinate. I’m over all the supplements. Couldn’t afford anyway. If anything, I would add maybe the K2.
Thanks

1 Reaction@ditobin It turns out that there are very many bone supplements, most often combos of various minerals, etc. some seem appealing and some very expensive. Ideally, our docs would guide us, but generally on our own with this…I’d prefer whatever I end up using to be 3rd party tested, organic and plant-based….one problem that crops up, is that magnesium (in most combos) can cause loose stools… and, a person who eats a lot of greens may get most of what they need from foods..I may end up getting separate calcium, D3 and maybe Vitamin K2…and the amount of calcium that can be absorbed at one time is about half of what’s in many supplements…I am open to any well-researched suggestions.

I do something similar. I take a trace minerals product that includes all the AlgaeCal minerals. I take calcium, D3, K2 & magnesium separately so I can choose the type & dosage. I did this after the AlgaeCal product gave me loose stools (due to the type of magnesium???). They were good about refunding my money.
@singingbones …thanks for your response…yes, my GI issue came from AlgaeCalPlus, and I had only built up to 3 of the 4 caps ….since I had CRC last year, i take this seriously ! Besides I eat a lot of greens now, so probably am not magnesium deficient…What “trace minerals product’’ do you like ? Being able to choose my own dosage very important, as I am small and need less of most meds or supplements. Please, let me know what you came up with…or your favorite sources of info.

1 Reaction@nycmusic - After a bit of research to find trace minerals similar to AlgaeCal minerals, I found LDA Trace Mineral Complex by SFI Health. It has 11 minerals (that I also found in many other bone supplements) & only recommends 1-small capsule a day. A 30-day bottle runs around $24 on Amazon or a bit less if you have access to FullScript thru your dr. While I did compare the list of minerals w/AlgaeCal, I did not compare the percentages of each. It was challenging enough to find a product without calcium, magnesium, etc! It does not have strontium citrate in it or iron. Hopefully this link will work!
