Opinions on Cytomel vs Armour?

Posted by gillsden @gillsden, May 26 1:32pm

Hello - I have been posting on and off post lobectomy a year and a half ago. My TSH numbers are in the “normal” range. I have not felt right since the surgery. I have gained 20 pounds terrible muscle pain. My hair is falling out, I am exhausted. Currently I am taking75 mcg levothyoxine. I met with a new endocrinologist and explained how awful I felt. He suggested taking Armour or adding Cytomel. Has anyone had experience with either of these meds? Thank you!

@gillsden, I found this site comparing the 2 drugs Armour Thyroid (desiccated thyroid) and Cytomel (liothyronine) to treat thyroid issues:

Did you start treatment with one of the medications? Is it helping?

I lost my thyroid in 1988 due to MEN2 (Medullary Endocrine Neoplasia). Hereditary condition I inherited from my father.
I was on Synthroid and always felt hungry. So hard not to overeat and gain weight. I went to a new endocrinologist after mine retired. She put me on Armour Thyroid and I felt wonderful! Most doctors do not like it for they feel it is not consistent. I was on it for years and then had issues that were eventually discovered to be a needed pacemaker resetting. But 2 of my specialists pointed to Armour Thyroid as a big issue. It really suppresses the TSH and many doctors hate that. They all gave me such grief about it I went on Levothyroxine. It’s okay but I do not feel as good as on Armour Thyroid. So I think if your doctor offers it I say try it. It really worked for me. Might take a while to get the right does but that’s not a big issue.

@colleenyoung I started Armour a couple of weeks ago. I do not feel as tired. Hoping it makes a difference in weight soon. I understand it takes a while. I am hopeful. Definitely better than levothyroxine. Thank you for checking in
