Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use

Posted by blueorca @blueorca, May 5, 2018

i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

With LPR I cough frequently, I have regergitation of thick mucous, my voice has changed, and I can barely sing in church, and I no longer want to spend the night at anyones home, as I often wake up during the night gagging on mucous and going into coughing fits. GERD was a walk in the park compared to this. I have one more GI scan coming up Fri. and then I am done. GI keeps doing more and more tests, but nobody has an answer to make it go away.Anyway, I wish you all the best on this difficult road.

I have your exact symptoms, and it is all out suffering, do you have any idea on how to treat this or who to see? I am even thinking of doing stem cell treatments, that will reset my stomach lining, so horrible.

Welcome to Connect @jillmaguire10,

Omeprazole (Prilosec) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), used to treat certain conditions where there is too much acid in the stomach. It is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/omeprazole-oral-route/description/drg-20066836

May I ask what brings you to Connect, @jillmaguire10?

I have GERD plus Hiatal hernia. I Took esomeprazole/Nexium for more than 20 years. It did help, but recently My conditions worsened. I started experience nausea. Endoscopy showed inflammation. Doctor suggested another medication that did not improve my condition. My diet was not strict, maybe it is the reason. Trying to do everything the right way, but acid reflux do not go away for several days. Any suggestion?
Thanks

Are you sure you have GERD? Google LPR and see if that is what you may have. Treatment is different if you have LPR.

I have GERD and H.H. too. I am seeing a Naturopathic Doctor. She will be testing for food sensitivities and H. Pylori. In the meantime, I am chewing 2 DGL tablets 20 mins before meals. I drink 1 cup of bone broth in the morn, on an empty stomach, and I do an exercise in the morn to get my h.h. down (easy to find on internet). I bought a water filter jug that makes my water more alkaline, and I am drinking low acid coffee now. I have gone from 4 to 2 cups a day so far. I drink marshmallow root, slippery elm (yuck), and chamomile tea and try to drink 8-9 cups of water per day. I don’t have dairy (except butter) and very little bread/wheat and def nothing acidic. I’m trying to heal my stomach so I can wean off PPI’s since I’ve been on them for years. Trying to alternate PPI’s one day and H2 blockers the next. I’m still doing some things I shouldn’t (snack at night) so I don’t know but I just want to enjoy my life without pain. If this doesn’t work, I’m wondering if surgery to fix a hiatal hernia would be the answer. I don’t know if it’s as easy as wanting it or if it has be a certain size and what is the success rate. I’ve also found some YouTube videos and do some exercises that are supposed to help. PPI’s do help but they are def not a miracle cure, they are less effective with time nor should we be on them indefinitely. Anyway, that’s what I’m doing.

I believe I have LPR as I’ve been diagnosed with GERD but never have heartburn, just sore throat. I am doing many of the things you mention and was wondering if you are making the bone broth or purchasing.

Thank you! Cindy

I had both heartburn and sore throat, but mostly heartburn lately. The old medicine - Omeprazole/nexium started to cause nausea and was changed to rabeprazole after endoscopy . Didn't use a bone broth

There are so many food we should not eat/drink with Gerd. And if you have other health issues, like high cholesterol and migraines, you are left with just about nothing else to eat. Then you have to start making choices at every meal. Forget going out to eat!!!!
