Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use

Posted by blueorca @blueorca, May 5, 2018

i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

I believe I have LPR as I’ve been diagnosed with GERD but never have heartburn, just sore throat. I am doing many of the things you mention and was wondering if you are making the bone broth or purchasing.

Thank you! Cindy

I have purchased a powder in health food section of grocery store. I have made bone broth but if I find it hard to make it often enough to have a cup every day.

I had both heartburn and sore throat, but mostly heartburn lately. The old medicine - Omeprazole/nexium started to cause nausea and was changed to rabeprazole after endoscopy . Didn't use a bone broth

Hi there: Has anyone had success in weaning off of Omeprazole? I take it for GERD. Thank you in advance!

There are so many food we should not eat/drink with Gerd. And if you have other health issues, like high cholesterol and migraines, you are left with just about nothing else to eat. Then you have to start making choices at every meal. Forget going out to eat!!!!

I had my GI appointment yesterday. I was told I can start tapering off the 40 mg of Pantaprazole I take daily. I have no reflux or heartburn at all. I get my next EGD and Colonoscopy in Oct. The NP at his office told me yes, Barrett's can go away. I will find out in October.

Just curious as to why you all are needing to go off this med. My husband has been taking 10 with no relief and pcp just increased to 20. Has run no tests and I’m concerned.

I think many gastro docs prescribe Omeprazole until they figure out what you have and then they continue to prescribe it. I didn't realize it was an issue to get off it. I know you shouldn't stay on it too long.

I never had heartburn either. Wound up with Barrett’s esophagus. I’ve taken PPIS to heal ulcers but took only for 14 months. I’m on Pepcid an H2 blocker. There are multiple side effects from PPPIS.

Is the Pepcid working for you? I’d like to avoid PPI, but have chronic sore throat which I believe is an acid issue.

I was taking 2- 40 mg omeprazole per day and my doctor asked me to just take one a day because it was not good to take that much over a long period of time which I had been taking it for about a year so it was no problem to quit the night time dose of 40 mg

What is your schedule for tapering off? I tried to taper off another PPI (Pantoprazole) by taking 1 pill every other day for two weeks and then stopping completely, according to my Dr's recommendation. I was off the meds for about 3 weeks when I started having stomach pains so I had to go back on the drug.
