Night Sweats

Posted by arizrose @arizrose, Jul 1 9:01pm

I’m a 68 yr old woman. About 6 nights a week I get completely drenched after being about 2 hrs of being asleep. I get up change and then again same thing about 2 hours later. None of my doctors know why. I have been tested for everything by my rheumatologist, pulmonary doctor, endocrinologist and primary care doctor. I have not been able to get a good night’s sleep for about 9 months. I’m beyond menopause. Anyone else have this issue?

arizrose, Yes. It was my low coritsol levels. You may want to get them checked.

Blessings & Prayers and it's miserable!

I had night sweats as a symptom of Giant Cell Arteritis. I understand that is a common symptom of that disease. But a rheumatologist is the doctor that normally treats GCA, so your rheumatologist would know to look for other symptoms of the disease.

I assume with that many specialist one of them would have checked your hormones. The fact your past menopause does not mean your past the symptoms of a hormonal imbalance. I would think you would not be. I can exhibit itself in many ways. Here's an AI search.
"While menopause typically occurs in a woman's 40s or 50s, some women may experience symptoms well into their 60s, 70s, and even 80s. These lingering symptoms are often due to declining estrogen levels and can include hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Approximately 10% of women over 70 may still experience persistent menopausal symptoms. "

I am a 63-year old female. I've had daytime hot flashes and night sweats for 20 years. Not drenching like yours but enough to wake me up every one or two hours all night long. I had such severe sleep deprivation and the cognitive issues that brings that I felt suicidal. I tried every hormone therapy available and nothing worked. Finally an OB/GYN nurse asked if I'd ever tried gabapentin, which no one had ever told me about. "It's been used for night sweats for about 30 years," the nurse told me. I started taking 400 mg spread throughout the day (a very small dose) and miraculously I started sleeping again and the flashes and night sweats were much less frequent.

I think my thermodysregulation is caused by a broken hypothalamus as opposed to lack of hormones. I have numerous autoimmune illnesses including sarcoidosis. I'll never know why it took medical providers 17 years to tell me about gabapentin.

Unfortunately, I developed a skin condition (most likely lichen planus) shortly after I started taking the gabapentin. After three years of worsening symptoms I've decided to wean off it to see if that helps. Numerous drugs, including seizure meds like gabapentin, are known for sometimes inducing skin reactions so I guess we'll see. It's always something. 🙁

I’m 70, hypo and I started with night sweats about 6 months ago. She did an 8am cortisol, it was normal. Her answer was see a gynecologist, Really. Felt so much like pass the buck. It takes 8 months in my area to get an appointment, thanks doc.

I was on HRT for (too many) years , so minimal sweats. Then five years ago I developed uterine cancer . The surgery included removal of ovaries,so since then my estrogen level is like zero and every AM I wake up in a sweat.

That’s how I am feeling. My doctors all just say, I don’t know.

No reason an endocrinologist should be telling me to see a GYN. She is a specialist herself and I have a pituitary tumor that has been under control for 10 years.
Her response was there is no correlation to your thyroid, I completely disagree. I just get meds from her and labs every 8 weeks and nothing more. She didn’t care to run any hormone labs.
What is wrong with some doctors. If I could change easily without a long wait, I would. Takes forever these days.

Yes, I do! Exactly the same. I have no idea why this happens as I’m 70. It did begin after my third battle with Covid. It’s been like this for over a year.
