Gastric bypass (R n Y) in 2018. I understand that absorption may be the issue because of the gastric bypass, however, my blood test results prior have all been normal. So, why would I have absorption issues all of a sudden in 2026?
The past few weeks I have had problems with getting dizzy. In fact, I just fell down today after getting up from a nap. Generally, I get enough sleep at night, but I seem to have to take naps during the day. My naps are usually an hour or 1.5 hours. Anyway, I got up, started walking to the bedroom door, and got dizzy. I attempted to get back to the bed to sit, but I only made it half way before I fell.
I am not vegan or vegetarian...I consume quite a bit of protein from meat sources. I probably have steak once or twice a week. When I eat salad, I usually have a spinach salad.
My bariatric doc just gave me the Rx for an iron supplement and I started it yesterday. I am taking 325 mg once a day. I also am taking 500 mg of Vitamin C with it to help with the absorption.
Are there many people here with iron deficiency anemia? What are your most frequent symptoms? What changes have you made to your diet or vitamin supplementation? Anyone out there having absorption issues due to gastric bypass?
Also, not sure if it is related at all, but I have been having bone pain, specifically in my legs lately. And by bone pain, I mean the kind of pain that happens when someone is growing fast as a kid...like growing pains.

I had RnY as well and am ET/Jak2. I have been iron deficient for years. My ferritan got down to 5. I tried oral supplements but I did not absorb well and kinda made me sick. I’ve had 3 iron IV infusions and that helped. Symptoms I’ve experienced whether it be the iron deficiency or ET have been debilitating fatigue, brain fog, spells (dizziness, weakness, sparkly eyes, full body saturating sweat). My docs all said ohhh that’s hypoglycemia from your RnY. It was not. I wore a glucose monitor. I have also had stomach issues.. (bloating after eating small meals).
We are now monitoring my iron bimonthly. Will do infusions as needed but I’m hoping the fatigue lessens. I wish you all the best.
My diagnosis is iron deficiency anemia. My dr. wanted to see low iron, ferritin and hemoglobin for 3 consequtive month. During this time I was exhausted, cold, short of breath, weak and sleeping all the time. I was taking B vitamins and iron pills. I took 2 hour naps 2 times a day plus sleeping at night with no problem. I hope that never happens to me again. Currently I am getting iron transfusions and feeling better. I did not have bone pain. Otherwise we sound similiar.

1 ReactionHave you seen a hematologist? With profound fatigue, history of severe anemia, AND bone pain, a heme opinion sounds necessary. (But maybe your doctor IS a heme doc?? I can't tell.)
I got a lot of iron transfusions for "anemia" before my diagnosis of MDS and AML (leukemia).
Good luck to you!
I had iron deficiency anemia for awhile several years ago. I got iron by infusion. With your numbers I am surprised that you're not. It worked. Anemia is wretched. I hope that you get the iron therapy that you need.
