New patient

Posted by medic_simmons @medic_simmons, Feb 19, 2018

I’m potentially going to be a new patient to one of the Mayo Clinic facilities. When you get sent to the Mayo Clinic do you get admitted to the hospital for testing or do you have to get a hotel room and go to the clinic for all of your tests? If I do have to go will I have to factor lodging into my budget? Thank you!

@medic_simmons, Good morning, and Welcome to Connect. I was a 'new patient' at Mayo Rochester 9 years ago this month. Here is what I experienced: I was referred to Mayo by my local medical facility when my condition required it. I was scheduled for appointment as an outpatient. My husband and I would need to provide for our own lodging and travel arrangements and expenses. There are many lodging options in near and reasonable distance from the Clinic. And at a wide range of prices.
But, we never got to do that because I was hospitalized in critical condition locally, and needed to be transported to Mayo. So, my health situation caused a drastic change of plans and I was taken right into the hospital. In this instance, insurance took care of my costs; we took care of my husband's costs.

I believe you should factor the lodging expenses into your budget.

@medic_simmons, Yes, it is overwhelming. The waiting and wondering about a diagnosis alone are more than enough. And the thought of travel to an unfamiliar facility in an unfamiliar town only add to your mental stress. My advice, as a patient and a mom, is to take one step at a time.
Keep in touch, and we will walk with you all the way to Mayo if you want us!
