Never say Never: Covid and intensely itchy nose

Posted by megangreen @megangreen, Jul 16, 2022

Three days ago I was diagnosed with Covid-19. Not a big deal in itself.

However in the past two days one of my most distressing symptoms (believe it or not) has been an intensely itchy nose. There are other things too but while my nose is pouring like a tap, the itch has been unbearable……I beg you, please don’t laugh!

Genetic sequencing has not been done to determine the precise Covid variant I have, however I assume it is one of the current Omicron subvariants in circulation, in July 2022, possibly BA.4 or BA.5. So, as you do, I did an internet search to find out whether an itchy nose was a prevailing symptom. This led me to a Mayo page comparing and contrasting symptoms associated with Covid-19, the Flu and Allergies.

Wasn’t I surprised to find a categorical statement, on the Mayo site stating that NEVER was an itchy nose, mouth, eyes or ears associated with Covid-19. As I have never had allergies and am unlikely to have developed them in the precise window of time that I have ‘caught’ Covid, all I can assume is that the Mayo information is either not up to date for the current variants or is overtly incorrect.

Any thoughts?

It’s great you’re not experiencing the worst this virus seems to bring out in some people. Hopefully it stays that way for you.

I checked out the article you were referring too and all I can say is, yup…never say never. This virus is constantly mutating and morphing so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to have more symptoms added as it takes on another life of its own. At the time the article was written this wasn’t one of the symptoms. The latest variants weren’t around then either so it’s entirely possible it’s another addition to the variant.

Let me know how it progresses for you. Did you try an antihistamine to curb the itchiness and water faucet nose?

Because I’m not allowed to get the vaccine because of a heart birth defect, I’ve been overly cautious. Unfortunately, I caught Covid 4 times, yep, lucky me. Number 1, late May and all of June 2020. It was the worst because no one seemed to know how to treat it including my pcp. I must have built up some antibodies because it took till December 2021 to catch it again, first variant, but I had mild symptoms.

Then in March 2022, I got regular Covid again. Without any protection, I was clobbered, really nasty symptoms. On day 25, I lost my sense of taste, 6 days later, I lost my sense of smell and turned into a long hauler. Sick as the proverbial dog for weeks and weeks, my nonexistent immune system wasn’t ready for a sneak attack. May 10th 2022, yep, lucky me again. Covid invasion #4 with BA #4 variant. July 17th 2022 BA 4 was only a mild case thankfully but I’m still suffering form being a long hauler from original Covid. I’m so desperate, I went to Walmart on Monday and begged my pharmacist to give me the vaccine. Knowing my full medical history, he told me to ask my doctors. The 3 of them said absolutely not I told him. I figured as much and said to my pharmacist, gee, have they reported suicide by vaccine yet? He just shook his head no and waved goodbye.

I told you all this because Covid can mimic many things, just look at me and other long haulers, You can smell things you swear are real but are only in your head because no one else can smell them. I have a serious medical condition that allows a toxin to seep up to the surface of my lower legs. It’s real and since I can’t feel pain, I literally claw myself bloody. I’m in an episode right now and the last 3 days and I read your post. If the body can produce itching so intense for me, I thought, why can’t your brain imitate that feeling for you in your nose? It seems possible to me but you have no way to stop it. Good luck, I have no fingernails I clip them so short, now I must put my gloves on because the itching in my legs is driving me crazy.

My" itching ", like tickling has been in the inner ear canal all the way down to my throat.
It feels like a tiny worm is wiggling. Mainly left ear. You can't scratch it. Nothing relieves it.....no irrigation, heat or cold, pressing on it...... if I open my jaw as far as I can and pull down my earlobe firmly it helps a little temporarily .
This sensation will abate and I think yay! But after many days, weeks even, it does return.
I have the loss of taste/smell, fatigue , brain fog, etc. For 2 1/2 years.
I've waited 3 months to get into my PCP

Try texting the Pfizer Company to ask about any trials that might be open to you. If you’re suffering anyway, it’s worth considering a way to make the suffering worthwhile. It’s a very courageous step to take. Suicide is NOT your best choice !

Unfortunately I have other health issues that would prevent getting any vaccine. MGUS is a precancerous condition and mine is starting to progress into full blown Cancer. Because of that, the vaccine would mess up my blood work for many months after the vaccine shot. Knowing if and when I would need to start cancer treatment out weights any vaccine. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Btw, my pharmacist knew I was kidding with him and if you get to read my own post today, you’ll see I’m battling Covid #5 which is most likely Variant BA.5 and is nasty.

I can’t even imagine how awful you must be feeling. Staying hopeful in such conditions means requires strength I truly admire !

Thank you but I have 7 different doctors keeping me alive too. I was born defective and have had to deal with adversity all my 78 years. I draw my strength from my Maternal Grandfather who was Native American and survived the 1918 pandemic at age 52. Hope you are well yourself.

My Step-Father was part Pueblo and my Step-Sister and Step-Brother are Lakota. From them, I learned a tradition I’d like to share with you. When someone departs this life, a loved one is to carry that person’s soul for a week to ten days. Doing so means looking at the world through the eyes of the one who departed. At the end of the 7-10 days, the soul-carrier will find a sign saying “thank you”. It is a great comfort. I carried my Step-Father’s soul. The sign I found was a long feather on the ground in a part of the world where the bird doesn’t live or visit. My Step-Father had always lived with his roots in the ground of his ancestors, but with an eye to the wonderment of the birds of flight. It is perfectly acceptable for each of us to “designate” who we wish to carry our soul

Wow! I thought it was just me. I recently caught Covid for the first time and the intensity of my nose itching was just unbearable. Since I’d never had it, I wasn’t sure if it was a symptom or not.
