Never ending headache after heat stroke
Has anyone had any long term headaches after suffering heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Four years ago my husband was working outside in hot weather building a fence. I was not with him at the time but I believe he was near a heat stroke, or at the very least suffering from heat exhaustion. Since this day he has had a “never ending” headache. He had never really suffered from headaches before. About 2 months after this day he started seeing a neurologist who did the usual tests, MRI, CT scan which all came back normal. His diagnosed him with migraines and treated him with medication for the next 2 years. Nothing has taken the headaches away or controlled the headaches in anyway that he has noticed. However some days are more manageable than others, but he always has a headache. My daughter has done some research concerning brain damage after a heat stroke and some of it seems to fit his situation. He has seen two neurologists and both label it as migraines and don’t see any connection to the heat event. He has been dealing with this for four years. It is so discouraging and we just need to find help. We have no direction at this point. My husband was 66 when the headaches started. He has always been healthy and hard working and does not easily give into pain but this has worn him out.

I have a different situation and different cause. Are they willing to do an MRV or CT venogram? I was written off as migraines and unfortunately it wasn’t. My situation is different I have intracranial hypertension which is rare. I just wouldn’t want to miss something.
Welcome
to Mayo Clinic Connect, @kmt57. Tagging a few others on Mayo Clinic Connect who've talked about heat stroke to see if a connection with this and migraines is familiar, such as @nycdave7 @lioness257 @margaretob @sueinmn. Have the neurologists prescribed a medication that has helped him at all? If so, what has helped?
Thank you we will look into this!
I got heat stroke and heat exhaustion whenever I was 11 years old and my neurological doctor diagnosed my migraines shortly thereafter and I am almost 55 now and I have tried several medications and I am currently on Maxalt melts, aimovig shot 1 a month and I also take amitriptyline and I have maybe one migraine a month now.
Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @tinyizabella071617. Having migraines from age 11 through 55 is a long time to deal with that. Are you satisfied with having one migraine a month with your current medication regimen? Or are your doctor and you trying to get to zero migraines per month?
Wow zero migraines per month what a concept. My doctor has me down to about 10 and I am pleased but my neurologist is not. I get Botox and Lidocaine injections.
I had a horrible experience with Emgality over the pandemic. I could not poop for 3 weeks. I was losing weight 2 lbs per month. I started gaining weight. All I had was the loading dose.
I sure hope you find the cause before masking the pain. Important to know. I was given sumatriptan and it was bad for me given I have a cerebro vascular malformation.
I am happy with 10 as it is all relative
One migraine is better than one each and everyday
My neurologist is happy with my current
Medication Regimen and feels since it's not broken why chang e it.
