Neuropathy started during a gout spell

Posted by tdemaria @tdemaria, Dec 10, 2018

Ok, my neuroaphy started during a gout attack. It started in my toes and spread to my feet and hands within a few weeks. I never had it before and the Dr. continue to say I am not diabetic. I was is good health up to that 3 week point never having it before. The treated the gout with Colchicine, steroids and allopurinol during the 3 week time. I have every blood test known with no direct cause. I have some RA factor but not enough for clear diagnosis of RA. Seen a neurologist and dont have permanent damage yet but have flares from food and sometimes without. I ate a single chocolate cookie last night and now my feet are on fire along with arms hands and legs. No DR can figure this out, seems like something attacked my nerves during the treatment. Can it be something attacking nerves and why can we not find the connection between sugar and the neuropathy. Anyone that has some idea i am open to anything.

Welcome @sandra55, It's great to see you doing your own research and learning what you can about your condition. Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy or just having neuropathy type symptoms?

@johnbishop - thank you for your response! At the moment, I have not yet been diagnosed, it takes a while before seeing a neurologist here. My symptoms are tingeling, stinging, sometimes intense "lightening" pain typically in feet but also other places. It can be very painful, but usually lasting a short time.

@sandra55, in case you haven't seen these sites on neuropathy, you might want to add them to your favorites for research and learning more about neuropathy.

Over 25 years I was diagnosed with Gout, after waking up with huge red inflamed toe on left side in great pain. I went to see my doctor immediately who said gout, but just because it was on the left side which is unusual, withdrew such liquid from my toe joint. Came back negative for gout so I was put on Neurotin (brand of Gabapentin) which helped a little. This doctor moved and my next doctor insisted it was gout although I never tested high for uric acid. Three doctors later still insisting on gout, I couldn't stand the pain any more and at last was sent to rheumatologist who first said gout but gave me every test imaginable and at last said no I didn't have gout, never had gout, and I had better see a neurologist ASAP. The neurologist put me on Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) which in 3 weeks calmed my symptoms and unlike neurotic, didn't have bad side effects.

I guess I was not clear, I dont have gout pain any longer only the neuropathy stayed. I have not had a gout flare in a year just the neuropathy. The neuropathy gets better first thing in the am but worsens as the day goes on. I still have a bulging disc in my lower back but the connection between sweets and the neuropathy does not make sense. I have been tested for diabeties many times and not even close to diabetic is what I have been told. I have tried a total vegie diet and it help but it dont take it away. I am on day 11 after neck surgery for bulging disc and told it may be mechanical and though it has helpd my neck pain the nerves in my arms are not healed yet. Its changed my life from a fit guy who ran and biked daily to a couch riden bitter man. I hate what i have become and would love to get a real authentic diagnosis. I know I will never be 100 percent but 80 would be nice, hell ill take 50.

Hello there,
Hope you are doing better these days. I just came across your message. Colchicine might be a trigger for your NP symptoms at that time? Check out: Abstract. Colchicine has been in use for therapeutic purposes for many years. It can, however, cause subacute onset muscle and peripheral nerve toxicity in patients with chronic renal failure. In this report we describe 6 patients who developed neuromyopathy after the administration of colchicine.

Hello @colchicine70, Welcome to Connect. I took Colchicine for my first occurrence of gout but only took it for a short period of time in which it did help with my symptoms. I see that you wanted to post a link so I thought I would share it for you since new members are not allowed to post links for a short period of time to prevent advertising and spam. Here is the research link that I think you were referring to:

Did you develop neuropathy symptoms after being treated for gout?

I had a history of gout and later diagnosed with severe neuropathy caused by diabetes. I lost 100% feeling above my knees to my toes and my hands. I was on 14 meds a day including 2000mg of metformin. The neurologist said I would never get feeling back but possibly stop it from spreading 8yrs ago. I was mostly bed and chair ridden and had a electric cart to get around. My cardiologist recommended food for medicine and my high blood pressure, diabetes and other medical problems started going away so I slowly stopped taking all medication in less than 1yr. My skin started getting lesions in my feet with cellulitis almost every week in both legs. I found what I thought could be uric acid crystals coming from areas I was exfoliating with sandpaper to grow back health skin on my legs and hands. My doctors and family thought I was crazy. Today my skin is all healthy from detoxing about 30lbs of skin cells loaded with uric acid crystals. I feel my hands and some of my feet and they are getting better after my own cure. My Rheumatologist and all my doctors would have let me die at 61. I think I had the worse case of neuropathy caused by subcutaneous gout. My body was almost completely filled with crystals and they drained down to my feet from head to toes as I detoxed for 18 months day and night with all my strength. Most of my muscles are gone with enough I think to get stronger at 68. It was a rare skin disease my doctors still think I'm crazy. Screw them.

I have had the same experience. It started with gout, and now weakness in kegs, pain, neuropathy symptoms- hands, wrists, arms feet. Let us know what you find out..
