Nervousness makes me forget

Posted by Janie @dougjanehaltom, Nov 20, 2020

Many times I know the answer to a question someone asks me but as they are asking me I have the thought that I am not going to know the answer and then I don't. This could be something very simple, but I panic. Does anyone else have this problem or any solutions?

I'm seeing a neurologist in December. People can talk about something and I simply can't remember. Is that MCI or meds? I think it can be either! Maria.

@mariajean03 The appointment with your neurologist will be very helpful. If it will be face-to-face, ask if you can bring someone to take notes. If not, ask to record it so you can listen later. If you're like me, I get so busy listening and thinking about a sentence, I miss the next thing said! Will you let me know what the Dr says, please, if you are comfortable to share?

Yes!
A doctor told me that I was “the nervous type”.
This did not happen until I married. I spoke in public as the president of an organization, trained in media communications.
What happened?
I went to counseling many times:
An unhappy marriage.. did not divorce because of my children. A mistake!

Hello @dougjanehaltom and @mjpg2013

Nervousness and anxiety can certainly interfere with the functioning of our body. Any disease or disorder that we have can be complicated by anxiety. It sounds like you have both experienced this very thing.

Are your memory problems related to word recall (not being able to get the right word when you need it), forgetting names of relatives/friends, or is it a problem of getting lost when you are driving to well-known locations, etc.?

If you have any concerns about memory problems it is a good idea to talk with your family physician to see if a workup needs to be done to check for other problems that might be causing memory issues.

Hi, Theresa. The second paragraph in your reply is me. This has been really bad for the last six months, maybe longer. I lose train of thought in mid sentence. I at one point couldn't pronounce, words I've used for years. That for the most part has stopped, but I'm still struggling with my memory of words.

Hi Maria, you sent me a private message a couple days ago. Just wondering if you knew I had responded? I'll leave it there until I hear from you again. Best, Hank

Hello @tired,

I'm wondering about your general health. What other symptoms or problems have you been having? I'm thinking about problems with fatigue, sleep, problems walking straight, etc. Have you had a physical exam recently where you have been able to talk about this problem with your doctor? If not, this might be a good first step.

A consultation with both a neurologist as well as an endocrinologist might also be a good idea. I've recently joined a support group for people with immune disorders and memory and brain fog problems are very common with immune disorders.

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Thanks for replying. I've had a full neurological workup ("normal"), a full sleep study ("normal"), neuro-psych eval ("normal"), testing of thyroid and lots of other things I can't recall right now ("normal"). I'm glad you found a group you're optimistic about.

@anhedonius If you have not yet met personally with an endocrinologist that might be a good idea. Often patients have to work really hard and advocate for themselves in order to get an answer!

Insteresting, Teresa. I've had Sarcoid since the 1980's, didn't realize memory and brain fog problems were common. I've experienced both for years, off and on as the Sarcoid comes and goes.....heavy steroids got it under control when diagnosed. Of course, the steroids present additional problems through the years. Your info makes sense for me...tks. It's was also really important for me to take responsibility for my bodies and all it had going on. When I became truly proactive, began insisting on following the signs and saw endocrineology, we found a serious hormone imbalance, are correcting it with med and doing so much better. Much clearer. Heart is better....it took me years to begin to be responsible for the choices and decisions re doctors, follow-through.
