Negative side effects of Eliquis

Posted by 1951vtnative @1951vtnative, Aug 29, 2024

I have been on Eliquis, 5mg x 2 daily, and the skin on my arms is now so thin that slightest bump or rub peels my skin off and takes weeks to heal. No matter how I try to protect my skin I an severely bruised which never heals.
Need alternative.
Thanks
Allen

Hello @1951vtnative, Welcome to Connect. I'm also on Eliquis but taking 2.5mg morning and evening. I can definitely relate to the slightest bump or rub causing a bruise or skin tear that takes weeks to heal. For me, I can't blame it all on Eliquis because I'm also 81 and have had thinning skin for more than a few years before I started on Eliquis after I had a couple of blood clots. Unfortunately, I think when you are on blood thinners it's normal to take weeks to heal from a skin injury.

I did find some suggestions that might be helpful but I'm thinking you probably already know.

I also try and make sure my skin, my arms and legs stay moisturized by applying lotion on them daily. I do have some pull-on long thin sleeves for working outside to keep from getting scratched. Have you tried something similar?

Seems to be typical of Eliquis patients, @1951vtnative I thought I must be clumsy from all the bruises and hematoma-like areas. I've made a conscious effort to slow down and not multitask. At least my arms are bruise free these days. John has some good tips. I use a sun shirt when gardening or hiking, it helps with snags and prevents sun burn. Same with hiking pants giving you some protection from brush and ticks, as well. Perhaps later versions of Eliquis will somehow improve this factor. Always wonder what's going on inside my body if this is happening outside.
