in 2008 a "well-defined adenocarcinoma" was found just above the rectal junction. It was removed by laparascopic resection. Pathology found cancer in 7 of 11 lymph nodes, so chemotherapy (FOLFOX6) was started after a second opinion was received at Mayo Jacksonville. It continued over six months. I've been colon cancer free since then. Prostate cancer and squamous cell cancer have also been defeated.
I'm leaving you this link, which leads to the blog I wrote over the five-year period to full remission, so you can see the whole picture of one person's treatment history. The blog begins at the bottom of the first page, so read upward from there.
A good positive attitude really helps, which my wife and friends provided.

Congrats. I hope in the near future more of us could follow your lead
Hi Anne , I feel encouraged to read this . Did your doctor commence gnrh for ovarian protection before chemo . My cousin is 35 with stage 3 bowel cancer .
Same as you 6 years ago! Stage 3! Tumor removed! Lots of chemo, radiation and surgery! Reconnection failed! Blood clots in lungs twice! Drove myself to ER twice! Nurses chewed me out! Should not have been alive! With ileostomy had couple of blockages! Went to ER! Had one time 2 stomas due to gas pushing small intestine closed! Stoma prolapsed to 5 inches! Got new surgeon and gave me colostomy and pretty stoma! Spouse passed during this! Don’t see how I recovered by myself with eating, cleaning etc! Now having spinal stenosis in back! Surgery made it worse! Anyway, still above ground!
Hello my name is Billy I am 54 years old was diagnosed with stage 3c colon cancer back in july 2019 went through 12 rounds of chemo and then a lump came up under my surgery scar several Doctors keep telling me it was just a cyst and they let it keep growing untill the pain got so bad I demanded they take it out and low and behold it was cancerous anyway my new doctor told me yesterday that during my surgery they either left some cancer cells our they dropped them during the removal of my primary tumor,,,,,,,any way anyone in my similar condition.
No. I haven’t experienced your exact situation. I know the Surgeon stated he found more cancerous tissue during my surgery and it was removed. I think sometimes the colonoscopy does not show everything. I had cancerous polyps, not a tumor., I am sure, that’s why a follow up colonoscopy(s) is so important. There are others on this site that i’m sure will weigh in that have had similar experiences. Good for you for being persistent. Sorry it happened
@billythekid66, wow that is rough. When did you have your second surgery? Will you have chemo or radiation now?
Never heard of 31 radiation sessions. My doctor said radiation does a lot of damage to healthy tissue. I had 2, and that is his limit. Are you working with a oncology surgeon or regular doc?
I was working with a Dr. Specialing in Radiation Therapy. Ten months later I am experiencing a narrowing in one of my ureters that was limiting urine flow leaving the kidney. The Urologist said it was due to scarring from the radiation treatments.
My lesson learned is to ALWAYS get a second opinion.
I was diagnosed with 3C last year. Had colon resection surgery February 26, 2019 and started chemo March 28, 2019. Had 12 rounds and I feel great. You can do this. Stay positive as much as possible. I focused on getting through each treatment one at a time and did a count down. It now seems like so long ago. Last month I had a CT scan and first colonoscopy since last year and everything looks good. It is an emotional rollercoaster for sure but just take things day by day. You are allowed to have bad days but focus on your mission – beating this evil monster. You got this! 💪🏼
@flahertygang I love your success story. I will have my first colonoscopy in October, one year after my colon re-section; I have had those moments of “am I going to be ok?” Just thoughts, nothing based in reality. So, thank you . virgo
Virgo, I just celebrated my 21 years from having Stage IV Colon cancer! After they took out what they coulld we statred chemo! I had a recation to it, 5FU. Within three weeks of starting the chemo I was in the ER with a couple hours to live! My wife was told to get my daughter there! The Priest was brought in for Last Rights! I was on Life Support with around the clock observation for 10 days. After 7 days they kept m in the coma, but still in ICU on Life Support! After a total of 13 days they gave my wife the option to take me off knowing there was no garuntees. First time I didn't start up, but the second try I did!
When I came out of the coma I made the decision I was going to change my Life and Live! That next year I was working out of my motorhome traveling from Mexico to Canada in the Rockies! During that time while working I didn't pass up many Trout Rivers. As a matter of fact I was on all or part of a day for 150 days that year!
The doctor still to this day can not understand how I lived and how I have never had a reocurance of the cancer!
IT'S EASY! IT'S ALL IN YOU MIND AND IN YOUR SOUL AND THE WANTING TO LIVE!
YOU'LL BE FINE! JUST BELIEVE IT!
AS B-Ball coach Jimmy V. said a year or so before I had my experience "NEVER EVER GIVE UP"!
I STILL LIVE MY THAT MOTTO!
My thoughts and prayers to you! You will be ok!
