Bone marrow biopsy and/or blood tests for MGUS

Posted by Patty, Volunteer Mentor @pmm, May 10, 2023

Somebody was talking about some new blood test that would eliminate the need for bone marrow biopsy to definitively dx MGUS. I think this is interesting. Any of you bypassing the BMB in favor of these blood tests?

@barbarian1 So, my suggestion to you, as a veteran/survivor of a blood cancer journey, is stop looking to google or ChatGPT for answers. Please have the proper tests done, wait for the results and then sit down with your doctor. Because trying self diagnosis by interpreting results yourself can leave you with a huge case of anxiety, as you’re already finding out. Let me know what you find out please. ☺️

@barbarian1 I do care! That’s why I’m a mentor for the Blood Cancer & Conditions and the Bone Marrow Transplant support groups. When going through my AML/BMT journey, I knew of no one whom I could talk to with first hand experience other than my medical teams. It wasn’t until I finally met someone face to face that had gone through the same journey that I actually felt hope! I learned the value of mentorship for hope and survival.
That’s why I love and appreciate the Connect community so much. This is a safe haven for anyone going through a challenging health crisis. We’re a great lifeline because most of us have walked the walk and can talk the talk.
So let me know what you find out from your BMB and the chat with your hematologist. You’re not alone here. ☺️

I also agree with what Lori said. I had a bone marrow test a few months ago, in my chest, with only the local anesthesia (and a Xanax) and I was terrified to the point of vomiting. It turned out it was less painful and less uncomfortable than a mammogram. Really. It wasn’t a big deal and gave my doctors information they needed to treat me.
