Complications/symptoms after Gallbladder Surgery

Posted by kalenkerby @kalenkerby, Oct 21, 2018

Hello. I am a Male 32. I had my gall bladder removed 4 days ago. Since I have had strange pains and feelings. Nausea after I eat Everytime. I realized after it's removal my stomach will have swelling, but it feels like there is a Large Knot just right of my Belly button. I also have had severe Hunger type pains. It's the only thing that I can compare it too. Very bad and painful pains that resemble Severe Hunger pains. I have also had headaches since the surgery. Mainly the right back of my head, it feels like there is a Knot under my skull almost. It doesn't hurt severely, but it does hurt sometimes worse than others. And nothing seems to help. Almost a throbbing pain. And of course pain across my entire abdomen. Top to bottom. Side to side. Which is to be expected I guess. But I have have more pain in my right chest and under my left breast off and on. What of these are to be expected and not?

@lauren915 - Welcome to Mayo Connect! You are right- there are a lot of members here with gallbladder experience.
I lost mine too years ago. I remember having similar problem as you describe. With the combination of back pain and shortness of breath I recommend that you call the doctor’s office tomorrow. The back pain relates to the nerves around bile duct. Your surgery was so recent it is difficult to be relaxed about it.
Please get back to us after you talked to the doctor’s office!

@lauren915 I am sorry for the late reply. For some reason my email sends some of these notices to the junk folder. I try to remember to check the junk fooder at least weekly. .. sometimes I fail.

I hope all went well with your primary doctor and he listened and you got answers.

My son is in his early 20s and had his gallbladder removed laparoscopically yesterday and he is in severe pain and vomiting. He went back to the hospital and his white blood cell count and calcium levels are high. Doctors don't know what is wrong. He's lost about 50 lbs since the beginning of the year and was diagnosed with ulcers too. It's worrisome.

I know this is a little later, but I need help. I am beginning to wonder if these are related back around 2010 I had my gall bladder removed, ever since then I started having migraines aches and pains and massive weight gain. My thyroid is enlarged, but only one test showed high levels and an ultrasound shows nodules. I had been working with docs to control my weight and keep hitting block walls. My entire family history back 5 generations is less than 105 pounds I am almost 180 and gaining regardless of diet and weight. I was researching weight loss solutions and post cholecystectomy points to thyroid issues such as hashimoto hypothyroidism which would explain everything I have been seeing doctors for. Can anyone guide me.

I don’t think your surgery is related to the massive weight gain and migraines.
You need to see an endocrinologist for a complete evaluation of your thyroid and possibly your pituitary gland.

Hello @delyn and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am sorry to hear of your son's health issues post-gallbladder removal.

It is too bad that the doctors in the hospital did not know what is causing this problem. I'm assuming that he went to the ER?

I hope he is feeling better now, but if he is still having problems today, I would certainly recommend that he contact the doctor who performed the surgery and let him or her know what is going on.

Has he done this yet?

He went back to the hospital and they kept him overnight and released him the next day. He's doing better now as he recovers. I hope the worst is behind him. Thank you for the concern.

I got my gallbladder out 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems since. I have pain all day long now in my stomach and that’s on a strict low fat diet because I did a ton of research before to try to feel better. I have had nothing but issues. I can’t eat hardly anything without getting sick and whatever doesn’t make me sick will turn into stomach pain that’s just excruciating pain that comes and goes every day. I am a 22 year old female that weighs 115 pounds so I already didn’t have weight to lose and now I’ve lost 10 pounds in two weeks. I feel tired all the time and somehow worse than I did before the surgery and prior to that my gallbladder was functioning at 3% so it was causing a lot of pain. This is worse than that pain was. I was hoping this would fix my prior stomach problems but just created more. I go back to my surgeon tomorrow so I will hopefully get some answers.
