My neurologist has prescribed Nurtec for visual symptom.
Anybody have experience with using Nurtec for scintillating scotoma (migraine aura)? have never had a migraine headache, but have worsening visual symptoms probably related to MS. Vision is dim, some brief doubling, plus the geometric patterns that I would call hallucinations, but science calls “scintillating scotoma”.
After Nurtec, amazing bright, crystal clear 20/20 vision, where I can read without glasses happens very soon and wavers in and out for a while. Seems to have days of positive, unsteady effects on vision. Very odd drug.

@tatiana987 interesting that I have the migraine aura but my doctor has not prescribed Nurtec …! I have huge floaters in my eye too, and am wondering if Nurtec would work for them as well! Is Nurtec a prescription item?
Yes-my doctor has prescribed Nurtec, as I get migraines after my monthly immunoglobulin infusion. I have multiple autoimmune diseases. And I also have the visual aura and what I call the “Picasso painting effect” like you do, but mine is accompanied by pain shortly afterwards. The
Nurtec works well. We’ve also tried UBRELVY and that works too. No other over-the-counter medication stopped the migraine. I hope this helps other people as well.
Rashida, yes Nurtec is prescription required and in a category called « special » here in Nevada. I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere. My limited experience is that everything wrong with my vision is gone, vision is bright, perfectly clear, feels supernatural, perfect. But, but, but, but vision changes over hours and days leaving vision improved but not perfect, with flashes of the supernatural feeling and some minor nausea. I have to laugh a bit at myself because several doctors asked me over the years whether I thought I had some supernatural experience with the visual auras. I thought that idea was silly back then. Now I wonder if they meant this perfect vision that feels unreliable.
@tatiana987 when you say “ vision changes over hours and days leaving vision improved but not perfect”, do you mean your vision clarity changes from hour to hour or day to day?
I am in Canada, so I don’t know if it is available here, or whether our government health plan covers the cost, but I certainly will ask my optometrist about it!
Rashida, For me, I think I lost the certainty of knowing what to expect from my vision. Before Nurtec, I knew about how far, in which light conditions I would be able to see what objects, colors, etc. I knew what would be clear and what likely unclear. I knew which way to look and at what because I had long practice with what worked for me. I knew and felt confident that I would experience the same vision as in the recent past. That feeling of security has gone, and generally what is unsettling now is unsettling because I saw less well before. I lost the day and night clear certainty about how my vision will work. And that makes the process different, So hard to explain this. I feel like a younger, stronger person could handle the feelings of instability better than I. If you were suddenly struck with perfect hearing, would you trust and feel at ease with what had happened to you?
How much of what we see is what we expect to see?
Rimegepant is the other name for Nurtec and it is made by Pfizer in India. I was given a prescription for 75mg melt in mouth units. I think neurologists or pharmacists would have specialzed knowledge here, but I wonder whether an optomitrist would know. It seems kind of an opposite field to study in my view.
What part of Canada are you in, if Imay ask?
@tatiana987 I am in Ontario. Our health plan is run by the government of Ontario.
Because Nurtec works for vision I believe here it would be an optometrist or ophthalmologist who would prescribe it. I will be seeing my optometrist again next Wednesday so I definitely will mention it to her!
How long did you take Nurtec before you saw improvement in your eyes? I have very large floaters in my eyes which obstruct my vision.
You will think I am crazy if I tell the truth. The truth is that I noticed a change in a matter of minutes. Since I only take Nurtec as needed for vision problems, it was my third pill about 2 weeks later where my vision seemed perfect. And that varies now between much improved and supernaturally bright and perfect. I should say that I have two lenses from cataract surgery, one European and one American, very different lenses but both obviously work well under the right conditions. I have not had the usual visual disturbances for about a week, and the doc wants me to take more Nurtec.
Whatever you decide, I wish you well. This is a powerful drug for some of us. Not to be dismissed IMO without trying if your vision causes you distress.
@tatiana987 when you say you have two cataract lenses, you mean one in each eye, not the two in one eye, right?
I have sight in only one eye, so that is the only eye on which I have had cataract surgery, and I opted for the distance lens (still wearing glasses to see in the distance - not progressive lens).
Rashida, yes my left eye sees with European lens, right eye American.
If you try the Nurtec, I am curious whether it affects your blind eye. I believe it affects the optic nerve. Not sure about anything here.
Rashida, I may have misled you into thinking that Nurtec is prescribed for vision improvement. As far as I know, it is prescribed for migraines including ocular migraines, so the effects on vision are extra, outside the intended use. Not exactly off label use?
