Have you had any radiation or procedures done lately? What would help me is I would eat a few crackers with warm water. It seemed to loosen up the phlegm

@msherfinski Thanks for the suggestion I will try this . NO I haven't had any procedures done or radiation . I just had a ear infection but its healed up now I dont think this had anything to do with it as I had phlegm in my throat earlier .

I struggled with this after radiation for laryngeal cancer 3 years ago. My cancer has returned and I'm in the hospital right now after a Tracheostomy.. I have a tremendous amount of phlegm, but I'm sure that has a lot to do with my surgery. Before I came here, I had the same problem you have. Kept me up at night.

I have GPA in my sinuses and I have the same problem at night. Doesn’t bother me during the day. My sinuses drain constantly all day, but I’m drinking fluids and eating. I usually have to eat something at night and use two pillows.

Hello, I had the same problem and it was because I could not swallow the mucus. I had a total Laryngectomy last year for cancer. I take plain liquid Tussin (Guaifenesin) everyday to keep it thin. Make sure it does not have additives like DM, or for flu and colds.
What also might help is to drink ginger ale or other colorless soda. The carbination seems to help. Ask medical staff or hospital speech Therapist. Paulette

Hi @lioness

If your doctor determines that this isn't caused by a cardiac or pulmonary problem you might try some OTC products. I have a similar problem. I use Mucinex at night (or Robitussin DM which has the same ingredient). If I forget to take it before I go to sleep, I usually wake up and have to take it then. Keeping water by your bedside is also a good idea. Also, elevate your bed or at least use an extra pillow as was suggested by @julsbridget in the post above.
