Mucus after using bathroom
What can cause mucus after using the bathroom, both after urinating and having bowel movements?
Since around November or December 2025, I’ve noticed there’s mucus hanging down from me or white stringy particles in the toilet bowl. This has happened both after urinating and having bowel movements, and there’s times it’s hung down from my front, and other times it’s hung down in my rear. It doesn’t happen every time I use the bathroom, but its happened most days. I’ve been worried because it’s been happening often, and it hasn’t really stopped since I noticed it late last year.
I’ve been having other issues with my bowels, like I’ve felt like when I have bowel movements I’m not getting everything out. I’ve been having bowel movements most days though, but I still feel like there’s stool in me that I’m not getting out.
What could be causing the excess mucus?

1 Reaction@gravity3 I haven’t talked to a doctor about it yet. I have an appointment this month that I can mention it at
@nicole19 Talking to your doctor at your upcoming appointment sounds like a perfect idea!
Here is what Mayo Clinic says, affirming this as your next step. I want to draw your attention to suggestions that will help you talk to your doctor. These are things like changes in the amount of mucus you are noticing along with other clues to help.

Do you have other symptoms, maybe diarrhea, bloody mucus or having belly pain at the same time? Your doctor may also ask, do you notice other bathroom habit changes. Has anything with your diet changed?

2 Reactions@jlharsh I haven’t really had any other symptoms, like the ones you mentioned. When I had my cycle last month, on maybe the last day of my period there was bloody mucus hanging down from me. I don’t know if it was in my front or rear.
I haven’t really noticed my stool be coated in mucus, but there’s been maybe a few times since late last year that it’s looked like there was mucus on it or like something slimy was on it. Usually that’s not the case though.
I don’t know of anything that changed in my diet.
Be sure you let the doctor know that you feel that you are unable to get all of the stool out. Mucus is usually just a sign of inflammation.

4 Reactions@nicole19 You are observant, and noticing things like you mention will be be important to share with your doctor. I agree with @lylii that it will be important your doctor knows you feel you cannot get all the stool out.
You mention your cycle and mucus hanging down the last day of your period. It will also be valuable information to share whether or not you notice other changes with your cycles. I’m not sure if this will help but I did a search from the Women’s Health Support Group for vaginal discharge. There are quite a few discussions and comments that popped up:

5 Reactions@jlharsh it’s in a couple weeks
The mucus on the last day of my period happened once, but I’ve only had one cycle since then. Now that I think about it, I think I had bloody mucus last year one time on my cycle. Most of the time when I’ve seen the mucus or discharge, it’s been when I’m not on my cycle and it’s been often

1 ReactionHi Nicole,
Sorry that you are going through this. As others have said, symptoms of "incomplete evacuation" (meaning you don't get all the stool out at once) and mucus in stool (if that's where you think it is originating from) are signs of bowel inflammation and can be a sign of more serious bowel disorders. I urge you to stay calm, keep paying attention to how you react to foods and if you can find any other patterns, but to aggressively and proactively get a GI doctor to listen to your symptoms and check you for diseases.
Wishing you the best.

2 Reactions@gboi thank you for responding. The mucus hasn’t really been in my stool, but it’s been hanging down from my front or back after urinating or having a bowel movement. Sometimes I’ll just urinate, and there’ll be either what looks like mucus hanging down from me, or something white and kind of curly in the toilet bowl.
@nicole19
Hi,
I am sorry to hear that, and I really cannot be much more help than to reiterate my recommendation to see a doctor. Whenever I (a male) had mucus coming out of my back it was after painful cramping related to an inflammatory bowel disease - you have not mentioned pain so I am cautiously optimistic that it is not as severe, but please get yourself checked out soon.
Best regards,
G
