MRI while standing/sitting?

Has anyone had an MRI while they are sitting or standing. I have read about this new type but it is not available in many areas. My husband has had many MRI's lying down, but his back does not hurt when he lies down. As soon as he is standing, he is in pain. We are looking into this new MRI as a better diagnostic tool.

Yes, I had one of these done locally due to back issues. It was easier and less painful. When I moved on to the Mayo Clinic, the MRI needed to be redone as the quality of the sitiing one was not as good.

Hello @breick,

I appreciate this helpful information! If you are comfortable sharing more, can I ask what this standing MRI showed the radiologist that previous MRIs did not reveal?

I don't know if it showed any more than a standard MRI. I chose it because I wanted my spine to be compressed (sitting or standing) as that is when it was causing pain. The images were not as good a quality as the Mayo Clinic MRI.

My husband is so claustrophobic that he has to be sedated (completely out) so that he can be still. Do you know if it showed anything different from a supine MRI? Am also interested in where you were able to find such a facility.

I think it showed the same basic results, just not as clear and detailed as the Mayo Clinic wanted. A friend told me about this facility. I am in the Orlando Florida area.

Thanks for the information. I think the closest one to us is in Roanoke, VA. If it does not show clear results, it might not be worth our time to make such a trip. Appreciate the information.

I too am very claustrophobic and was unable to complete a normal MRI in the tube… In MKE a partner of Froedtert Hospital known as CDI had a seated MRI that I was able to tolerate. It does squeeze your body at the shoulders quite tightly to keep you from moving. I did not like the squeezing, but I did feel like I could at any time stand up and climb out of the chair, so I was able to complete the event with much less stress from the horizontal MRI.
