Moyamoya and stroke

Posted by kvalentine @kvalentine, Feb 25 9:58am

My 16 year old daughter presented with stroke symptoms last week. She had a pretty severe headache leading up to it. She had tremors in her right hand, twitching in the right side of her lips and then eventually was unable to clearly speak. The CT scan and MRI showed an abnormality in the right side of her brain. She had an occlusion in the right carotid artery at the base of her brain that appears to have been there since birth, but new arteries are forming and feeding the brain. They believe she has Moyamoya disease which elevates her risk for a stroke. We are waiting on an angiogram to see exactly what is going on? My question is what do I ask the doctors. We have ongoing doctor visits now and she needs to learn what to do limit the possibility of having a stroke.

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @kvalentine. I'm sorry to hear you are going through all of this with your 16-year-old.

If you've not already seen it, here is some useful Mayo Clinic information on Moyamoya:

- Moyamoya disease https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/moyamoya-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20355586

I know that on Mayo Clinic Connect, we have other parents whose children have been diagnosed with Moyamoya or other relatives of those with this diagnosis who are at elevated risk for stroke. I'm hoping they will have thoughts for you related to what you should ask the doctors and how you all can learn to limit her possibility of having a stroke. Please meet @mamabear7116 @mking2020 @yolandar @saigenicole. I'd also like you to meet @hopeful33250.

How are her twitching, tremor, headache and unclear speech symptoms today?
