Missing two consecutive weeks of BCG treatment

Posted by Bobbie @deidre77, Feb 2 9:30am

Hello fellow members,

I have begun receiving BCG treatments and by February 12th, I will have taken three installations.

Since my urologist installs the BCG solution in his office with the assistance of his nurse, since she will be on vacation for two weeks, my fourth treatment will be postponed for 2 weks . My question is... can this two-week postponement possibly diminish the effectiveness of the treatment? After this lapse, I will again be receiving consecutively the two remaining treatments.

Thank your in advance for your response(s) which I appreciate.
Wishing all much success and may we have hope for improvement and good health.

Bobbie

Hi Bobbie,
I had similar interruptions due to two UTIs during my gemdoce treatment and I ended up having 5 instead of 6 instillations. I had the same question regarding effectiveness. My oncologist said it is ok, but I’ll find out for sure when I have my first follow-up on 2/12.
Best wishes.

Hi there,
Yes similar situation. Only had 3 BCG in 9 weeks. Interruptions due to chronic UTI and now gross haematuria with +++ clots. On long term oral amoxicillin. Now symptomatic anaemia. Seeing Oncologist today. Will ask about efficacy of BCG & interruptions.

Good luck on your follow-up, I hope the BCG treatments are a success for you.

I completed two of the 6 treatments so far and asked my urologist if it matters that I am skipping two weeks and he told me it does not. Actually, I am not skipping by choice but rather because his nurse will be out for one week and he - the other.

At any rate, here's wishing both you and I success on this treatment.

When you visited your oncologist, what did he say concerning the 9 week interruption period and continuing the BCG treatments?

Here's wishing you success on your treatment. Be well.

Hi all,
It’s been an interesting 2 weeks of continual mismanagement. Firstly the urologist made the comment “people always think they are bleeding a lot, but really it just looks that way in the toilet”. Also told to stop being a nurse. . 3 days later no change in frank haematuria & clots. Knowing I was anaemic, Pale, actually white as a ghost, breathless on any exertion and no energy. Was given an emergency appointment to see my wonderful oncologist. So I got bloods done & MSU, knowing I was more anaemic. Got a call the next day from my wonderful oncologist before appt. His comment “ oh Janine I think we need to give you 2 units of packed blood cells (transfusion) BUT there is no hurry, can be done in the next few days.” The lab actually called him. I told him I wanted it done ASAP / today as I felt I was going to pass out. Was informed the hospital would contact me shortly. 5 hours later, no phone call received. Now 5pm, oncologist gone home. The hospital booking staff member had no record of any admission papers sent. I waited until next morning. Rang oncologist receptionist. Threatened I was going to A&E (public) unless something done now. Anyway my haemaglobin Hb was 67. The orders include to repeat bloods in AM ….nothing else. Ended up having a 3rd unit of Packed blood cells the next day. With absolutely no follow up. Staff called my “wonderful” oncologist. Was told to repeat bloods 3 days later & he would call me today. Which did not happen.
So impressed. Also issues with UTI, new bug. Obviously contributing to bleeding issues. Thankfully bleeding stopped after 2 days on new antibiotics. So love being on continual antibiotics. Still have painful bladder & burning on voiding. I am feeling better. Hb now 89, but able to function with plenty of rests. Only person overseeing my care is myself. As for the remaining BCG treatments who knows. Oh and my urologist has gone on holidays till mid March. It’s wonderful here in Australia!

If I were you I would be looking for a new Urologist. I had one that was rude, ignorant, and told me to stop asking stupid questions.
I kicked him to the curb and got a new Urologiat. Best thing I ever did.
