Migraines and tingling in the body

Posted by melissa123 @melissa123, Nov 11 7:32am

My daughter has been having migraines lately. One lasted 2 days. She is also experiencing tingling in parts of her body. What could this be? She is making an appointment with her doctor but it won't be a while before she is seen. Does anyone have any ideas? She is 34 and has a 9 month old baby.

Hi, @melissa123 - wondering how things are going with your daughter, her baby and the migraines? Is her doctor appointment about this coming up soon?

Can you tell me more about "If I try to read or work on computer for more than 30 - 45minutes, strong burning sensation top front of brain."?

I am experiencing times when I have numbness/tingling in my legs/forehead, and what feels like a tension in the top front of my brain. It's hard to describe, but it makes thinking difficult/uncomfortable.

Thanks,
Erick

I think my burning sensation comes from "focusing" / trying to understand what I read or what is on the computer. I find I need to make notes so I know what I accomplished and where I left off (hand written or using computer Word processor).

My neurologist found I had a very tense neck (causing tension headaches) and gave referral to Physical Therapy - Dry Needling. After first session, no headaches for the first time in years. The relief lasted 3-4 hours. As the weekly session went on, the relief increased. After 20 weekly session, I now go monthly. After hearing the positive result, my neurologist prescribed Baclofen 10mg 3x/ day (muscle relaxer). This was one piece of many to my issue/ symptom puzzle.

Neurologist also has prescribed Vyepti infusions (once every 3 months). After first infusions, head pain level of 8 down to 4, which increased to 6 after 30 days. The second infusion was positive just not as much as first. Note, neurologist had prescribed two Migraine Infusions earlier. They were very strong but didn't help.

I showed my neurologist my research and she referred to Allergy and Immunology. I started getting a gut feeling that my root cause was "cell level".

Some of my research - check out to see if it's related to you.
I found Akiko Iwasaki, she is the Head of Yale University - School of Medicine - Immunology.

@trish55 - does your osteopath think your headaches and neck tension are connected?

@lisalucier he said they may be but he also cautioned that it is not always just one variable but it could be many, which of course is so frustrating. I will say that the headaches have lessened as a result of relaxing my neck more through proper deep breathing. When I feel stressful (which is pretty much always! lol) I focus on relaxing my neck and shoulders and I feel like a headache has been averted.

@melissa123,
Last 5 years 24x7 headaches/ migraine my "new normal". I have tingling and tremors in hands and internal tremors/ vibration. If I try to read or work on computer for more than 30 - 45minutes, strong burning sensation top front of brain. I also found correlation between the weather atmospheric pressure (up or down - weather app) and pressure on brain. Been working with Neurologist (CT Scan and blood work) and now added Immunologist (additional blood work - very interesting) to figure out.

Had major sinus surgery (2 ENTs, 1ENT assistant, 6 hours computer GPS guided), Dry Needling on back top neck muscle 20 weekly sessions, Vision checked - minor adjustment to prescription. Many moving pieces to the picture.

Relief - I had first Vyepti Infusion (once every 3 months), Wonderful! Pain level of 8 down to 4, which increased to steady 6 after 30 days. 2nd Vyepti Infusion in couple of weeks. Note: The two previous Migraine Infusion, very strong, but little relief.

Everyone is unique. I found that I have to push through, thinking positive with a side of sarcasm.

@lisalucier I just started going to the Osteopath and have my follow up next week. One helpful pointer was my deep breathing. I was lifting my shoulders up towards my neck while taking in a breath and he showed me how to relax and breath in from my stomach instead. It’s made me aware how tense my neck is. So far keeping headaches at bay. We shall see

@trish55 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having headaches, migraine and neck issues is a lot to contend with, along with tingling sensations.

How has the treatment gone so far with the osteopath? Are you getting some answers? Has any of the treatment helped the issues you've dealt with?

@mbixler I am also on Ubrelvy but I am very interested in the neck spasms you mentioned. Who diagnosed this? The reason I ask is I just came from my osteopath who is addressing my neck issues in relation to my headaches and migraines. I too, have the tingling sensations from time to time. Im just not sure if I’m seeing the right people to address the problem.

@trish55 I was referred to a Neurologist by my doctor, for having constant muscle spasms in my upper back and neck, of 6 months duration with a constant migraine during that period. The diagnosis was initially occipital outlet syndrome, but in the past 4 years has been relabeled as Cervical Dystonia. Was caused by whiplash injury from people using my car for target practice twice in 7 year span. Repeated soft tissue injury to the neck and upper back can trigger this condition, which can only be totally controlled by receiving Botox to the areas affected every 3 months. I’ve been receiving Botox since July of 2001, with only a few breakthrough migraines per 3 month cycle - which the Ubrelvy usually stops within an hour.
You definitely need a Neurologist to diagnose and treat this.

So sorry she is experiencing this. I get migraines frequently which I control with Botox every 3 months, Aimovig injections once per month and Ubrelvy as needed for breakthrough headaches. Mine are caused by cervical dystonia - which is chronic muscle spasms of my neck and upper back. It used to be called occipital outlet syndrome - there bundles of nerves that leave the spine and go through notches in the skull up to the brain. When all the muscles in that region are in spasm, they compress those nerves which fires off the migraines - and can also trigger numbness or tingling in the extremities. It could be that this is what your daughter is experiencing.
