Methotrexate & Nexium - drug interaction?

Posted by nettsie @nettsie, 3 days ago

I currently take Plaquenil and my rheumatologist strongly suggests that I switch to Methotrexate. However I take Nexium and according to various websites, there is a significant drug interaction between Methotrexate & Nexium.
I would appreciate all comments regarding Methotrexate.
Does anyone take Nexium & Methotrexate?
Thank you for your help.

@nettsie I was on Lansoprazole (which is a proton pump inhibitor too); at the time I started taking Methotrexate and I didn’t experience drug interaction, but as @tillymack suggests, check drugs.com or ask your pharmacy. Both have been my go to sources for information. I was taken off Methotrexate (which I was prescribed for psoriasis) after about four years because of concern that long term use might affect my fatty liver disease.

@nettsie I have read many comments on PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) not being advisable for long term use, but I have been on Lansoprazole for over twenty years now because of GERD due to a small hiatal hernia. So far it has neither affected me adversely nor interfered with any prescription medications I have taken since I started on Lansoprazole.

Drugs.com still is my go to site to check up on interactions with any new prescription medications I take - it even informs you of interactions with food, and I think supplements, too. I have opened an account on that site and have all my prescription meds listed on the site so I can know at a glance if there might be contraindications.

Become friendly with your pharmacist. I developed a great respect for pharmacists and nurses during the few years I worked part time as a unit clerk in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at a hospital in Toronto. Now I trust their advice more than I do my doctors! 😀
