Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquine

Posted by mcc @mcc, Jun 10 7:39pm

I have been trying to taper off Methotrexate but I keep getting flare ups after a couple weeks on the drop so my rheumatologist feels I should add Hydroxychloroquine to the mix for 8-12 weeks then try tapering off the methotrexate again with the goal of being completely off the methotrexate but stay on the hydroxychloroquine. I hate having to be on any medication let alone having to add more to the mix and was wondering if anyone on here has had experience with this and if so , your results? Thank you

I'm always fatigued and brain fogged, but I've never tied it to these meds. I have multiple autoimmune disorders, as well as heart problems, so its sometimes hard to know what is causing what! But I do feel confident that this particular combo has made a world of difference in my overall heath

I was diagnosed in mid Aug. On methotrexate, one day into 3rd IVIG treatment, hydroxycholorquine….i only have pain right above both knees. Feels more like burning….when the meds start building up in my system does this pain subside at all? Drs says meds take time to build in system. So I feel like it’s a waiting game. Using heating pad to help some as well as Tylenol/ Advil. Thoughts?

Please do not take Advil or any product with ibuprofen. Taking methotrexate and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen together can increase the risk of renal toxicity. Good luck.

I was on both meds for five years and never had any reactions. I stopped methotrexate 15 years ago and cut down the hydroxy on my rheumatologist advice. I was doing great until PMR hit me with a vengeance last year. Still on hydroxy, and now also prednisone.

Hello. I understand you feelings about drugs. But let me tell you I went from Xeljanz to RINVOQ and back the last several months and let me tell you that my pain level has never been below a 10. Hydroxychlorquine is the best drug for me. It’s the only drug that helps the congestion in my chest. However you must watch your eye sight. Good luck.
