Metallosis patients / heavy metal poisoning specialist
To those of you who have experienced metallosis, did you seek out a heavy metal poisoning specialist to help you through? Or did your ortho know the procedure to follow?

@hurkey I'm not sure what you mean by "to help you through" - the cure for metallosis is removal of the offending implant. Even if you find an a toxicologist or environmental medicine specialist to conduct chelation therapy, it will be a temporary "fix", the implant will continue to shed ions and particles as long as it is there.
Once the implant is removed and any deposits in the surrounding tissue are cleaned out, the body naturally rids itself of the remaining toxins through the liver and kidneys. After revision, my metal levels fell by 75% in the first 3 months, and were in the normal range by one year.
The bigger issue is finding an orthopedic surgeon familiar with removing the implant(s) and cleaning out all the affected tissue. Have you located one yet?
Thank you for responding; no, I have not located such an orthopedist. I wasn’t looking so much for chelation just an understanding of when it’s time to act on my situation. My cobalt level is 2.4; no symptoms at this time. It has increased one point in the last two years. By “help you through“ I meant navigate locating the correct type of doctor to address this as you mentioned. I don’t feel my current Ortho is qualified. The doctor that did both my knee and my hip surgeries, both total replacements, has retired. (Dr T) This current man, Dr G (in that same doctors group) has only served to order blood tests for my metallosis test every other year. He told me that my cobalt level was at a six in May 2024; but Quest labs sent me my results and I’m actually at 2.4 µg per liter. (!) He said come back in two years; I said how about one?
I’m trying to navigate my way through this and be proactive. I have the added issue of needing to get my BMI down to a safe number for Surgery, so I’m praying I have a year to lose enough weight to have a replacement if needed. I have ordered my surgery records and will have them tomorrow. My surgery For my THR was March 2010. I want to know what exactly was placed in me and try to understand how rapidly this may progress if I can. how did you locate a qualified orthopedist? Maybe that’s a better question. Or were you already with one that was qualified and familiar with metallosis?
I know exactly what you’re going through…however,I’m in the same boat. I had my rev (left hip) in 2020…the initial implant was in ‘04. However, I can’t find ANYONE who will help me with what has happened to me since.
I have (no official diagnosis) yet, but I know my mental function is getting worse, and the worst of it all is the unbearable gut pain I’ve had for the last 3 or 4 years. I’ve gone to GI drs, & they ALL say “everything’s FINE) !
If that was true, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be in so much pain. I cry all the time (uncontrollably). This is not who I am. It’s really hard
I have never heard of a heavy metal specialist. As many drs I have seen, it seems one of them could’ve referred me. 🤷♀️
A friend of mine had this same issue. He had the hip removed and replaced with a prostheses that did not give off metal particles. I believe he had it done at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
I think this all was a big topic/scandal in the orthopedic clinic about ten years ago.
Maybe you need to consult an academic center. They often have resources and insights to help in this type of problem.
My ortho surgeon must not have a background with nickel allergies and impact of putting stainless steel screws into a hip. When there is a known allergy, special testing is required which were not done. On the other hip, 4.yrs ago, cement was used with no problem. Stainless steel contains varying amounts of nickel.
Tina - This is a suggestion I am making WITH A GREAT DEAL OF CAUTION. There were many lawsuits between 2010-2020 regarding metal-on-metal devices. If you Google your specific implant(s) you can see if yours were among those. If so, you can probably find links to a law firm that participated. Contact them for ADVICE on finding such a specialist, not for initiating a suit.
All that said, what do your latest metal tests say about the levels of chromium, serum cobalt and cadmium in your body? Has anyone suggested where the cadmium came from (not in MoM implants)?
Finally, are you seeing someone to help you deal with the fear and anxiety all fo the pain and uncertainty are causing?
It has been a while since you posted. Have your levels been rechecked? Also, there are two cobalt tests that can yield very different results - blood cobalt and serum cobalt. Make sure they are using the same test each time.
I had my first prosthetic impact in my left shoulder shatter into pieces. The surgery was performed in 2012 and my Ortho, here in SC, said it was a poor design. He performed two revisions, one in 2021 and another 32 days ago. He was unable to get all the pieces out, owing to their close proximity to nerves.
I just started chelation a week ago. Im waiting for blood and stool test results to see what metals I may have issues with. I'm 71 and want to avoid any future issues with memory loss or other cerebral issues. I would recommend chelation if you have concerns about metabolism.
Implant, not impact.
