Meld of 27, scope on Monday

Posted by jmcdowell0718 @jmcdowell0718, Jun 20 10:45pm

Just got discharged home. Meld of 27,5 bands required on one esophageal rupture on Monday. Looks like I’m a transplant option. Sober for 90 days. Any suggestions or experiences to share? Pretty scared.

Congratulations on your sobriety! Keep it up, you are moving in the right direction. Would with people on your sobriety and work with your doctors on managing these complications. Are you currently working with a transplant hospital? After I left the hospital I was referred to mayo for evaluation and then approval as a transplant patient. They monitor closely and manage these complications to keep you going until you receive your donor liver. They have vast knowledge to manage you until a suitable donor becomes available. Do everything they recommend. It will most likely involve medication, diet changes and exercise. Get ready for lots of bloodwork and appointments. Fear and anxiety is normal and there will be ups and downs. But, the team will be there for you. Work with them and work with people on your sobriety. It's an incredible journey with amazing professionals. You can do this. Prayers for you

Congratulations on 90 days! It is so very scary. A year ago I was told I had maybe 30 days to live after a dreadful health incident that put me in the hospital for 6 days. Not sure what my Meld was then, but it’s at 16 now, bounces up and down. My advice: get a good GI/hepatologist, get in the right meds (it takes awhile), do what your doctor says, stay sober, get a referral to Mayo, or whichever great transplant hospital is near you.. If not already, get into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for addiction - this will be required for most transplant hospitals, certainly Mayo. If you can’t get a referral, refer yourself - this may be harder, but worth it. I was referred to Mayo last November, started the process for Transplant Evaluation in March, completed the week long evaluation just yesterday, and will know in a week whether I’m listed. Do what you can to get and stay as healthy as possible, so you are strong.

This is a lot to dump on you at once, and I am happy to share any support and advice I can to get you back to a place of well being.

Cool , cool on 90 days !!! Drinking not one of my many faults (even less so after my liver transplant) but my sister + friends who had that habit and stopped were so much happier they did. Very tough and scary for sure but the best by far for the long game !! Hang in there. Prayers up.
