Medication malabsorption after roux en y surgery

Posted by 23otters @23otters, Sep 12 10:52pm

I have been struggling with all of my medications since my surgery. My anti depressant doesn’t work like it did, pain killers don’t work as well. When o had surgery I begged for more because what they were giving me didn’t help the pain. I never had this problem until after my Bariatric surgery. Someone suggested getting an absorbers done by an internist so it would be documented. Any experiences with this problem of malabsorption?

I take Pancreatic Enzymes for malabsorption. It has really helped.

Bariatric surgery results in anatomical changes to the GI tract, and thus it can affect absorption and metabolism of oral medications. Extended release medication especially can be less effective. Immediate-release is better, but may require you to take multiple dosage of lesser strength during day then one dosage a day. Other medications may be absorbed better if crushed, but not all medications can be crushed.

DO NOT change any medications dosage or method of taking without consulting your provider. A pharmacist may be able to tell you if a medication can be crushed without affecting it potency.

This question was asked on Mayo Network and address some of your questions.

Have you talked to the provider about your anti-depression medication and if changes are needed?
