Medical Care
I am in a quandry. I have had severe, chronic pain for eight years. I had it under decent control until 2021 when it all came roaring back with a vengeance. We mocved to a new state almost a year ago. In the past two or three month my pain has ramped up to the point where it is difficult to sit, walk, or stand. My new pain management doc takes care of my pain pump, but he has done nothing to address the new pain dspite my begging him to investigate new avenues of pain mitigation. I was supposed to have an MRI this Monday, but it was canceled yesterday due to my pain pump. I have tried to get an appointment with a neurologist, but it would have been almost two months. So, here's the big question: how do I get medical care for this serious problem? Do I have to wait until I have to be taken to the ER? Seems like cruel and unusual punishment.
I will await any insights or help. Thank you all.

Yes, I agree.
Well said! Have had personal experience with the results of wrong decisions made by a PA. Also a neighbor who nearly died as a result of being over prescribed oxycodone by NP. Isn't this medical malpractice!?
very sorry about the difficulties.
a couple of thoughts
any possibility COVID made things worse?
Any possibility that the increased wildfires, creating more Air Quality Alerts...could have exacerbated the issues?
take care

Using a members special name makes it easier to understand who you are answering or asking a question of. Just a little hint to make the discussion run more freely. Thank you!
Hi there @heisenberg34 - Sorry to hear you're struggling so with flares of symptoms again. Is this the same pain you had prior to 2021 that you say was under decent control, or is it different? Have you had MRI's before for this area? If so, what were the findings?
Hmm...pain pump...some people swear by them and others say they are a waste. Bummer that its in the way and side tracking your test. Regarding pain, yes, you can always go to the ER if the pain is that severe. They may do an MRI. What do you think may be wrong or causing the severity of your flares?
Yes, heisenberg, trying to get a doctor appointment is dreadful. I tried to schedule a new local neurologist and was told next March is the earliest appointment. My current neurologist quit and the replacement cannot schedule me until October. Anyone who has children trying to decide on a career, a doctor in any field would benefit us all.
Unfortunately, our current medical situation makes it very difficult for potential doctors to even get into medicine...cost of years of schooling, long hours of being underpaid as a resident. Then, if you want to set up a practice, the cost of a physical address, insurance, scads of paperwork all make it almost impossible. Most promising young doctors end up joining a conglomerate in which they are restricted by tons of rules and regulation, often restricting how long they can see a patient.
I saw a private practice neurologist in our previous state. On my first visit she spent an hour and a half going over everything. An hour and a half. Most neurologists (or any doc) in a group will spend fifteen minutes with you.... tops.
Thanks for responding. I have considered going to the local ER. Unfortunately, I had one of the worst ER visits ever in my life. Reluctant to go back, but they are the only game in town. Yes, I had the pain pump implanted last April. It was supposed to have this amazing success rate. Ha! Not for me. Has never given me any pain relief. The pump just sits there in the front of my abdomen like a dried out bagel, mocking me. Might as well get it taken out.
Had an MRI on Wednesday. Waiting for the interpretation. Maybe Monday. I am surely hoping that it reveals something...anything. please!
Well good news then you had your MRI! I would definitely consider having the pump removed. Our bodies don't necessarily need or want foreign objects in them if it can be avoided, especially if the pump brings you no value. And let's face it nobody wants to feel like they have a dried out bagel in their gut . You gave me a chuckle with that.
Good luck on the MRI results. I will be curious what it shows. Do you mind getting back to me with the findings?
I will try to remember to pass the findings onto you, hopefully on Monday.
Have a blessed weekend.
