Mayo surgery

Posted by denisern @denisern, Nov 12, 2022

I am scheduled for pacemaker surgery at Mayo Dec 12, appointments that day are showing on my patient portal , all early morning, I have to call the night before for procedure time, but since everything else is morning, does thar mean procedure will be too? Also, no visit with PCP, they want a visit with a Mayo Dr that day? How is having surgery at Mayo? I'm very nervous.

The time of your surgery is based more on what other patients the surgeon has scheduled for that day then timing of your tests. That is why final surgery scheduled is not set till late the day before surgery in case there are adds, drops or changes.

I have had multiple surgery at Mayo, never a problem. I have found them very efficient and caring. The pre and post op nurses are wonderful.

One surgery was scheduled for early in day but delayed because previous patient's surgery took longer then expected. It was a very long day waiting, but I was kept informed on what was happening.

Good luck

@denisern Pacemaker surgery is not a a big surgery with a long recovery. My dad had a pacemaker which is placed right under the skin with leads that are placed near the heart by threading them in. Calling in the night before for instructions is standard at Mayo. Things can always change depending on patient load, and if there have been emergencies and surgeons are required to treat critical patients.

One situation I had with surgery for a fractured ankle at Mayo, was that my surgeon could have been exposed to Covid from another family member who had been in contact with someone who tested positive. There is always a backup plan, and I was introduced to another resident surgeon who would take over if need be. I didn't know until I reported for surgery the next morning that my regular surgeon would be there. He had to do a Covid test, and it was negative, so he was cleared to do my surgery. I was having my hardware plates removed from a previous ankle fracture, so it wasn't complicated. That's just one example. I have also had a colonoscopy re-scheduled to a different doc at the last minute because of staff reassignment to cover hospital shifts when a hospital doctor had called in sick . That wasn't at Mayo, just a local doctor.

This discussion might be of interest where you can connect with other patients talking about getting a pacemaker. My dad was so much better having a pacemaker.

Mayo is very organized. Be aware that the morning report time can be very early. I had 5:30am my first surgery (for lungs). Fortunately, I was at the hotel next door so could walk over. Just my body doesn't like that time. I also did a cardiac stent and they gave me a 10am report time. The cardiac nurse was fantastic. I barely had a bruise.

I have had 3 surgeries at Mayo- and I have to say every person through the process will make you feel as if you are the only person they are treating that day.
The communication with your loved ones and the expertise of every team member that supports your Dr is truly orchestrated to perfection. Rest east you are in good hands.
Good Luck

@denisern You might like this little photo tour of St. Mary's Hospital. It's a beautiful welcoming space with a lot of art work everywhere, and there are people who help can direct you to where you need to be.
