Any doctor recommendations for treatment at Mayo Clinic AZ?
Hi all,
First time participant. Great forum for ramping fast on prostate cancer. Ty all for your contributions.
Looking to inquire about physicians to request as I explore scheduling my initial meeting at Mayo AZ. Here is what comes up given my situation with Drs when I did a search online:
1. The Urologic Surgeon: Request Dr. Jack R. Andrews, MD
2. The Radiation Oncologist: Request Dr. Sujay A. Vora, MD
Anyone else come to mind that someone in this group can refer? I don't know much about Mayo so your guidance is truly appreciated.
About me: 64, excellent health and no other health issues and no meds currently other than Tamsulosin. I work out 7 days a week and maintain a pretty strict diet: Meditteranean and pescatarian. Occaisionally consume chicken and rarely eat meat.
Current PSA reading: 6
Biopsy came back with following:
Left side: Gleason 9 with tumor involves six of seven cores
Right side: Gleason 7 with tumor involves 4 of 7 cores
There was nothing else reported in the biopsy report other than what I've shared.
I am planning to start treatment pretty quickly. First step is to get the PET scan done which is currently ordered by urologist and sched for wk of 14 Sep.
Based on what I've learned it appears these are two potential routes to treatment:
1. Alternative 1: Advanced Radiation + Hormone Therapy (ADT)
2. Alternative 2: Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)
I welcome what other alternative treatments to consider as well. I do not qualify (based on criteria) for Tulsa procedure.
I also want to discuss the SpaceOAR option as it appears this is done together with Alternative 1.
Appreciate if anyone can share feedback on which doctors to request at Mayo AZ.
Lastly, is there a specific number to call the Phoenix location as well to schedule the initial visit?
Thx

The way it works with Gleason scores is the highest score is the only one that counts so you are a Gleason nine, The sevens really don’t matter.
I know you say that is all that was found. Just wanted to make sure, Were any of these things found in the biopsy intraductal, ductal, large cribriform, Seminal vesicle invasion, EPE or ECE. (Extraprostatic extensions extra capsular extensions). They can make the cancer much more aggressive.
If you’re going to have surgery, you should make sure the doctor can do both nerve sparing, and Retzius sparing surgery. That will allow you to get your continent back quickly, and make erectile function more likely. Sometimes with the Gleason nine, they cannot spare the nerves on that side.
Here’s some more information about it

If it turns out there is spread outside the prostate and they usually want to do radiation not surgery.

1 Reaction@colleenyoung How do I send a PM? When I try clicking on one of the user names you shared, the profile comes up but I don't see anywhere that I can click to send a PM to them. Can you assist here?
Ty for the info on these users and info on setting up first appt.
Also, can I specifically request to meet with a Dr if I provide the name of the person?
Cheers

Hi all, I just posted about recommendations for doctors at Mayo AZ. @colleenyoung included each of you in a response to my post. I am looking for recommendations of doctors that each of you used for treatment.
When you have a moment, can you kindly share who treated you at Mayo and if able share their speciality so this way I know what each focuses on.

@jeffmarc Jeff, many thx for the guidance.
There was nothing reported in the biopsy regarding intraductal, ductal, large cribriform, Seminal vesicle invasion, EPE or ECE. (Extraprostatic extensions extra capsular extensions).
Ty for the addl leads on GU Oncologists and the link to the detailed write up re: surgery option.
Will go and read up further on City of Hope Phoenix too.
Cheers

I'm not an expert on doctors at Mayo Scottsdale, but here's my story. I consulted with Dr. Paul Andrews there in early 05/2024. I was 70 at the time and he did my NS RARP in late 06/2024. I didn't "pick" him, but when he was assigned to me I did some research on him and liked what I saw. During the consult, I felt like like he didn't sugar coat things, nor did he try to sell me on surgery. I had a list of questions and I felt like he tried to give me fact/data based answers so I'd have realistic expectations. I decided on surgery (which was my bias going in) and he did my surgery. I believe he did an excellent job on me. I was released the same day, very easy recovery, and when the catheter came out I was immediately continent. I did have serious ED which slowly went away over 15 months. I did do a penile rehab routine they directed (when I asked them about penile rehab). Click on my profile and you can see my previous comments discussing my journey. Looking back, it all went very well but it was stressful at the time. I have no idea which treatment path is best for you, nor do I know who's "the best" surgeon at Mayo Scottsdale/Phoenix, but I do know Dr. Paul Andrews did a great job on me a little over 2 years ago. Best wishes.

1 Reaction@retireditguy Many thx for sharing Dr Paul Andrews. Will def review his experience. Did you ask for Andrews when you first made your appt or was he assigned to your case?
Thx
@gonzaler84 -- I didn't ask for anyone specific. He was assigned to my case, and then I looked at this bio. I looked at the other surgeons available at that time, but didn't see anyone I liked better back then. Of course, that was just over 2 years ago and things change. I posted my comment just to respond to your question and share who did my surgery. Also, I wasn't aware of the Retzius technique and (looking at the surgical report) I'm pretty sure that wasn't used on me, but I did specifically ask about nerve sparing and that was done on me. Best wishes.
@gonzaler84 I had my surgery at Banner. I was not completely impressed and switched my care to Mayo Phx. Since I had surgery, I was referred to Dr Christopher Wolters. I think he is considered post op care. Mayo is very busy and I find all the Dr's take the time to make sure you have answers. They do a lot of internships. I have not had an appointment that Wolters did not have an intern with him. I did recently meet with him about an AUS. He would do that surgery. I know he also does implants.
