Male 77 YO. Restless leg syndrome?

Hello everyone:

I am helping my father do a little bit of research. He has recently been complaining about pain/soreness in his legs when he goes to bed. He has indicated that this persists in any position he puts himself in bed. If he is able to fall asleep, the discomfort is gone. However, if he was to wake up and use the restroom, the discomfort returns and is severe enough to rob him a nights sleep. I dont think its RLS as he does not experience any involuntary twitching. Does anyone know what this may be?

From what I've read, most people are deficient in magnesium. My bf has had muscle pain and RL. He's forgotten to take his nightly dose and when he did it went away. We take Magnesium Malate (Designs for Health). He takes three. I take two.

It would be good to find out his levels, but you can always start slowly to see the dose that works best for him. If you don't go with Mag malate, make sure that the one you choose is easily absorbed and for muscles, since there are different types of magnesium for cognition, calming and helping with BMs. That's a reason to start slowly, too. Quality is also important. It's good to look at the ingredients, make sure that it's checked by an independent lab, and that the Other ingredients aren't cheap fillers that can cause harm.

Sounds like restless legs. I have it too if I'm not on medication. He needs to see his primary doctor for a referral to a neurologist

I hear mag Citrate is supposed to be well absorbed as opposed to just plain magnesium. But I read it can also act like a laxative - so easy does it.

I had restless legs from the knees down to the ankles and I did not have twitching. I could not tolerate Neuronton (Gabapentin). The doctor put me on 5 mg of Flexeril at bedtime and it took care of it. I no longer have to take it anymore and pain is gone. I took it for about a year. My legs only hurt when lying down. Praying for you as this is painful. I agree with the magnesium 200 mg daily.

I havent been diagnosed with restless legs but my legs due twitch at night. If I take 500 mg of magnesium they don’t twitch. I take 250 of mag citrate at lunch. and 250 of mag glycinate at night.

Be careful about taking magnesium as it can affect heart rhythm.

Leg pain at night can be a result of lumbar issues -- talk to your doc about getting an MRI to see if there is any issue with the spine.

For those of you with RLS, try 2000 or 3000 IUs of Vit D3. Has taken care of my RLS and my sisters's RLS for years. Sadly, I did not find out about this until after my Mom passed and she was a victim of RLS for many years. I guess this is genetic.

Has your father spoken with his doctor? Can you describe the pain, where it's located, sharp, dull, throbbing, stabbing, pins and needles, any numbness? The possibilities are numerous, and I don't believe the cause could be determined without some testing and in person assessment. Chronic pain is so often difficult to treat, in my personal experience. I trust that a GP or neurologist or pain specialist will give you some answers.

I have RLS and it has reached a point where I take Requip 3x a day now. I also have to use some homeopathic meds to supplement them sometimes. It is a terrible feeling like bugs crawling inside my legs trying to get out. I realize one problem is I have low iron because I have hemochromatosis. That I can't do anything about. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated.

I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time with RLS. Requip didn't work well for me. My symptoms generally occur only at night. I'm taking Gabapentin twice a day and then Trazodone and melatonin at night. Best of luck to you.
