Macular hole surgery recovery

Posted by zeldas @zeldas, Dec 25, 2023

My sister had surgery for a large macular hole. It has been about 6 days. Both her eyes are swollen. While we expect the eye she had surgery on to be swollen - we are worried as to why the other eye is swollen too. Has anyone ever heard of this? She goes back to the doctor on Wednesday

I had surgery for right eye macular hole back in summer of 2022.
A lot of gas put in right eye making me mostly blind in that eye for 4 weeks or so.
Also, I had to keep my head down for over a week.
But to answer your question…No; my left eye was fine and never affected. Never had swelling.
Glad you are going back to Doc soon to get this resolved.

Thanks - I don’t know why the other eye is swollen and she is worried about it. I sure hope she is OK. Apparently it was a large hole which developed very rapidly

Further to my initail qyery, after a month, my sister still cannot see out of her eye. The surgery repaired the hole, but apparently there was too much hemmoraging ? My sister is understandably very upset. She is in her early 70's . Thankfully she will still be able to drive.
Is anyone aware of any other options that could be pursued?
