Lyrica causing pain & body aches
Has anyone experienced Lyrica causing more pain than the medication relieving it?
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Raynaud’s syndrome, Central Sensitization Syndrome, SI joint osteoarthritis in beginning of 2021 at Mayo Clinic. I was originally prescribed Lyrica; it really helped when I was first diagnosed. I started going into remission at the end of 2021… but quickly fell out of remission in early 2022. It’s been a struggle since. Now I also have suspected neuropathy and POTS but waiting on tests. I had another accident in the middle of 2022 that raised my pain levels, almost doubling them.
Recently I ran out of my prescription for lyrica for 4 days due to switching doctors. I felt extra ‘flu-like’ however I noticed my pain levels were lower… once I got my refill I started having more pain, especially back pain. I’m wondering now maybe if the Lyrica is causing me more muscle and tissue pain.
Please let me know if you’ve experienced anything similar or have heard of this. Thank you!!!

I am glad I found this page. I was recommended Lyrica for recently diagnosed PTSD in addition to fibromyalgia. I have had fibromyalgia for over 30 years and have always managed it with diet and exercise plus magnesium malate. I started the Lyrica about 6 weeks ago. My pharmacist advised to start slower than My Doctor script and I increased from 25 mg/day the first week up to 100 mg. Initially I noticed the sleepiness and some blurry vision but the last week I really started to feel worse: depression, dizziness, nausea, and constant headaches. I was debating going off at the start of the week where I was supposed to increase another 50 mg but after a walk with my son I had severe pain in my legs and struggled to get up my 3 flights to my apartment. I hike for exercise so a walk would not normally tire me out. So held off on increasing and was going to talk to my Doctor but then I woke up early Tuesday morning with my tongue feeling inflamed and sore. Freaked me out. Left a message for my Doc and had a call back from office to stop completely. I took a few days for my tongue to not feel sore. Muscle pain going down a bit and feeling slightly better. Definitely not for me!
I am having muscle stiffness and pain all along my waistline in my back. I am on Lyrica 50mg in the morning and 75 at night. It feels like a pulled muscle from lifting something too heavy but I have not lifted anything. I am very careful not to do that. I looked up some information about Lyrica and it stated that it can cause some serious muscle pain and problems and stated that if this happens to call your doctor. If this is still going on Monday I will be calling my doctor.
@note8book I am 83 years old and was on the same dose that you are and the Lyrica had the same effects on my muscles and there were times that I felt as if I would just pass out. I took it for 7 months and the side effects were horrible. I am on the last day of weaning off it. It has taken 12 days to wean off by slowly lowering the dose a little at a time. I would not recommend anyone to take this horrible drug because of the side effects. It makes you drowesy ,constipated, dizzy, blurred vision, irritates your stomach and colon and makes your hair fall out. I was so drowesy that I could hardly function all day long.
Yes, some people do experience increased pain, body aches, or a “flu-like” feeling from Pregabalin instead of relief especially in conditions like Fibromyalgia or Central Sensitization Syndrome because the medication can sometimes cause paradoxical nerve sensitivity, fluid retention that creates deep tissue pressure, or side effects that mimic widespread soreness, and the fact that your pain decreased when you were off it for a few days but increased again after restarting is a meaningful pattern that others have reported as well, suggesting it’s possible the drug is now contributing to your discomfort rather than helping, which is why it’s important to discuss this clearly with your doctor so they can reassess your dosage or consider alternative treatments safely.

2 ReactionsSince lowering my Lyrica dosage to 100 mg at night for sleep, I have less body aches. Body and muscle aches are a side effect of Lyrica. I think your analysis was correct. I hope you have found relief.

1 ReactionUgh - I have just started Lyrica for fibromyalgia pain and pain from cancer meds (aromatase inhibitors and cdk4 & cdk6 inhibitors) but my pain level the first 2 to 3 weeks at a very low dose (25 mg x 2/day) is through the roof. And then I worked in my garden over the weekend and have so much pain, swelling and weakness in one leg - like nothing I’ve experienced before! I’m strangely thankful to know it’s not just me.
I don’t know that to be true but I don’t like how Pregabalin makes me feel brain fog.,tired and increased appetite. I’m going to try gabapentin my spinal cord stimulator is helping.
@iloveliz81 this article sounds exactly like me. I have been on Lyrica for probably three years and I just kept getting worse and worse. I couldn’t get up out of a chair. I couldn’t even think how to get my body up. I staggered when I walked like I was drunk. I was very wobbly always having to grab things or hold on just to walk. I had blurry vision, brain fog, simple words I could not remember I have always been really sharp with my mind and everything and everything was going wrong. I’ve had a lot of trouble with my lower back. I have one knee that’s been replaced and it hurt me so bad. I couldn’t even walk on it and now that I’m off the Lyrica I am feeling sharp again with my mind. I also quit staggering, and I am not wobbling. Praise the Lord. I’m not having any blurred vision. My back feels better. I’m having no pain. I was having so much pain from my head to my toes.
Your I could have wrote it word war word. Now I did not have a lot of trouble with constipation. I had a gastric bypass about 26 years ago and a lot of times I have loose stools and I’m used to that. I looked it up on the Internet to see if Lyrica could make me drunk and dizzy and have trouble walking.
And I could not believe my eyes, but I read everything I quit it the next day and I have been off of it probably a week and I am feeling so good. I feel like I am 10 years younger and it’s only been a week. I highly recommend to get off of the Lyrica. I quit it all at one time, but I knew there might be side effects cause it says to have your doctor to lower your doses till you get off. But what I did is, I opened up the capsule like two days later and sprinkled a tiny bit of it in some applesauce which you can use pudding cottage cheese anything I didn’t want to take a lot. I just wanted enough that I didn’t feel like I would have side effects and it did great if you have any questions or wanna talk about anything feel free to contact me. Thank you for your comments.
