Lyrica

Posted by sewsforfun @sewsforfun, 4 days ago

Hello! I take Lyrica for neuropathic pain. Recently when taking my evening dose, I experience pain in my feet afterward. I understand laying down at night can increase pain. But I'm already laying down by the time I take it. It doesn't seem to make a difference on the timing of the dose. Anyone have a similar experience?

Welcome @corkybailey, I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy with numbness only, no real pain so I'm not on any neuropathy medications as there are none that help numbness (or I haven't heard of anyone that's found one). A search of Connect lists quite a few discussions when searching for "neuropathy numbness what helps" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/.

Have you tried any other medications for pain relief?

@johnbishop I tried gamabetin (spelling wrong) but didn’t agree with me, light headed,GI issues. I am searching for something that may decrease the numbness.

I too feel other (bone) pains are caused if I take Lyrica in the night. So switched to morning. Anyway I really don’t know why I am taking it at all as it’s not helping pain. I just feel Lyrica may be helping in the reduction in the frequency of cramps.

@sbelur I see. That must feel frustrating.

I’ve been on Lyrica for 3 yrs. Dose has gone up to 100mg 3x per day. I take dose immediately when I get up 3pm and 10pm just be bed. Pain is manageable until around 5am. My worst issue is the numbness in my feet has reached the point where I it on the entire bottom of my feet and starting to progress to my ankles. Lyrica does nothing on the numbness for me.

@corkybailey ~ Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. I have some numbness, but nothing like what you describe. I haven't run across anything - drugs, topicals, etc. - that helps with that. Some people have said exercise, probably to keep the circulation going. Praying the medical profession finds something to help with that soon! If I run across anything, I'll be sure to post, and hopefully others will as well. Best wishes to you!

@johnbishop ~ I just responded to Corky on this subject as well, because I haven't run across anything that helps numbness. I'm still rather new to Connect and learning my way around. There is a weath of information here that people are gracious to share.
Question: How does one find out what kind of neuropathy they have? In other words, what tests are done to determine if it's small fiber or something else? I've never been told. I've also never had any nerve conduction tests run, but I'm to see a new neurologist in early June and will be asking him. Tonight I'm starting a 30-day trial of low dose Naltrexone which, if it works to take care of the nerve pain in my feet, I'll be tapering off of Lyrica. Best to you!

@rockinrene65 ~ Wow! Glad you found something that helps. I'm trying to switch over from Lyrica to low dose Naltrexone, which is non-addictive and doesn't come with brain fog!

@sewsforfun ~ Thanks! Starting it tonight and crossing my fingers and toes. No wait - the toes don't cooperate!! Think I'll pray instead. 😉

@corkybailey ~ I too tried Gabapentin at first and ditched it after a month for the same reasons as you. I've been on Lyrica ever since, but I'm tired of the brain fog and constant fatigue and dry mouth. And it's doing very little for the nerve pain. Tonight I'm starting a 30-day trial run of low dose Naltrexone, but even that doesn't eliminate numbness. From what I'm reading, nothing does. 🙁

@brennankb55 - Neuropathy Commons has a good overview of the different testing used to diagnose neuropathy - https://neuropathycommons.org/diagnosis/diagnosing-peripheral-neuropathy. This short video by Matthew B Jensen Assistant Professor of Neurology, University of Wisconsin that gives a good explanation of how the different neuropathies are diagnosed.
