Lung Cysts, anyone? Scan shows multiple cysts/ diff sizes/both lungs

Posted by abcw @abcw, Aug 18 7:04pm

Was prescribed an inhaler, and I'm in line for further testing.
I'm not a smoker.
Is this a CoVid artifact?

Thanks!

@abcw Hello, and welcome to Mayo Connect. Random findings on x-rays are always scary, especially if you have no history of lung problems. What may be described from an x-ray as a cyst MAY be a cyst (typically fluid-filled), or a nodule (usually more solid.) Often these cannot be differentiated in an x-ray, so a CT scan is usually ordered.
Where do these come from? It could be a Covid artifact, or evidence of another type of infection or pneumonia.

A full health history, and possibly a pulmonary function test will probably be on your schedule if the CT shows evidence of an active infection. If it is an artifact, and you have no symptoms like cough, fever or shortness of breath, the doctor will probably recommend following up in six months to a year to see if it resolves or grows.

Nodules, cysts and opacities are fairly common in lungs, and in a non-smoker with no other risk factors or health issues, are rarely cancerous.

So try to take a deep breath and schedule your appointments with optimism. We are always here to answer your questions.

Best to you with further testing. Nodules, shadow, "mass" have shown on my tests over past 20 yrs. Often from prior pneumonia/infection scarring, current infection, or active ra/sjogren flare & broncheactasis going on. Specialists at Mayo have been terrific keeping everything in check & any infections under control. The term lung nodule to me can now mean just an infection we get under control. Good luck to you!
