Lung cancer, high blood calcium and bone mets

Posted by whahoo @whahoo, Aug 22, 2023

Hi,

Recently diagnosed with stage 1b lung cancer. Had upper right lobe removed in April 2023. Recent follow up showed high blood calcium which may indicate bone metastasis. Any experience with this? Thanks!!!!

Hi Whahoo- I did have high calcium in my blood for years before my LUL Segmentectomy in March of 2023. That is one reason my new Dr. (Very smart Dr!) wanted me to get a lung cancer screening. He said that was a signal of lung cancer. Mine was a 1a-1b adenocarcinoma. I started taking Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3 in January and the blood tests right before and after my surgery were in normal range. My PET scan showed no cancer anywhere else, Thanks be to God! I also stopped taking any type of calcium supplements, ( I was taking calcium for years for my bones), except what is in a multivitamin. I get my calcium from cottage cheese, yogurts, etc. I do drink a glass of milk every once in awhile with dinner if I don’t have any other form of calcium. The K2 is supposed to help your bones absorb and keep the calcium. I pray that this may help? I have my first CT check up (6 months post op) mid September. Wishing you ALL the Best!

Thanks for the response. My oncologist took me off D3 saying that too much D3 can cause high calcium in the blood. My calcium was within the normal range before surgery in April 2023 and after surgery until the last test on August 14. Maybe it’s an anomaly. Not sure what I’ll do. I have another blood test coming up in Sept. Good luck on your follow-up CT.

Are you undergoing any kind of treatments? Like immunotherapy or chemo, etc.? Most definitely have to follow your Oncologists directions! I have also read that about the D3 as well. I only take it when it’s cloudy and rainy and I can’t get outside. But my K2 is every night. Also know that different labs get different results. LabCorp always reads my calcium level at 10.7 and 10.9, but Mayo came in both times at the 9.4 range. LabCorp says high, Mayo says normal. I will choose Mayo results over anywhere else for everything. Well hoping it levels out for you and you have good health!

Hi @whahoo, I had to look back at my results, and mine was high at the time I was diagnosed, along with several other labs that were unexpectedly high/low. I did not have bone mets. By the point that test was completed, my body was already under a lot of strain.
Hopefully stopping the D3, helps. There are many possible causes for a spike, it doesn't always mean cancer. I'll be interested to hear how your next set of labs look. Please keep us posted.

Was 10.6 at Mayo on Aug 14. Not quite sure what I’ll do. Was diagnosed 1b.

Taking vitamin K2 activates your MGP that pulls the calcium out of your blood and then drives the calcium into bone and teeth. You don’t have too much D3, you have too little vitamin K2. Read k-vitamins.com

Interesting. But why would the calcium be high for the first time in years and years of taking D3? I can’t remember if the onc asked about Vitamin K. Thanks for the response. I was told that most people don’t need to take K.

Actually, just like other supplements, doctors don’t agree on everything. Some don’t believe in taking vitamins or supplements at all, because you should get everything you need from you diet. BUT… how many of us truly are able to do that? Vitamin K2 has been researched and studied and had clinical trials completed. It has many benefits. It’s not just good for getting the calcium back into your bones; at the same time it is good for your arteries and veins. Check out https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm This is the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute website. It has many resources and researched studies on practically anything and everything you could want to look up. Very detailed, BUT IT IS NOT FOR SELF DIAGNOSIS! Just self knowledge to give yourself so you can talk more on your doctors level and it helps give you understanding of terms and such that they may use. Hope this helps. It’s your decision, as everything concerning you is, but just some outside ideas.
