Metastatic lung cancer: Has anyone taken part in a clinical trial?

Posted by fontspec @fontspec, Dec 4, 2025

I’ve been on here before, it’s been awhile though. Lung cancer since 2014, double lobectomy, chem, radiation. Now it has metas Metastasized to numerous areas. I’m possibly going to sign up for a clinical trial. Has anyone done this?

hi @fontspec - I'm sorry to hear your cancer has returned. may I ask what kind of lung cancer you have? has your oncologist recommended a clinical trial? I'm still on an approved targeted therapy, but my mom participated in a couple of clinical trials for mantle cell lymphoma. they were helpful and gave her more time with us.

Adenocarcinoma is my lung cancer. I confirmed this morning to accept the clinical trial.

@fontspec, welcome back to Mayo Connect. I'm sorry that it's not under better circumstances. I'm glad that you have qualified for a clinical trial. I've heard of them referred to as 'tomorrow's medicine, available today". It sounds like you are getting the help that you need. I hope it is effective for you.
Is the trial close to your home? Do you have family/friends that can help to support you?

The hardest part for me is the journey from my home to Rochester, MN. I will be doing this monthly for the next 2 years minimum. My oncologist is in Mayo, I haven't had an oncologist at my home area since 2019, which is why I ended up @ Mayo, which I will add has been the best decision I have ever made. My wife is my largest support, without her, I don't know where I would be.

@fontspec, congrats on deciding to take part in a clinical trial. I expanded the title of your discussion to reflect your question about what is it like to take part in a clinical trial. I believe members @lizfuller @dianemb @flusshund have experience with participating in a trial.

You will be in good hands at Mayo Clinic. I can understand that traveling monthly, especially in the winter, will be burdensome. The positive trade off is that you will be closely monitored and cared for by some of the best and most caring people in the world, from the volunteers to the doctors. (As you likely already know.)

When do you start the trial treatment?

They have the ball rolling, it is supposed to be this month yet.

@fontspec do ask if you can have any part of the regular blood draws done at your local hospital.
